Three Athens-Clarke County Sanitation Workers Featured

on Good Morning America's "Make Your Monday" this Week

Good Morning America recognized three well-deserving Athens-Clarke County sanitation workers on its "Make Your Monday" feature this week. They highlighted the role that these essential workers have played in their community, especially during COVID-19. Miah Love, Takisha Mapp and Beverly Gresham also were surprised with some winter gear from Carhartt and checks for $10,000, as well as lunch for their entire department. Lumpkin County Secures Two "New" Firetrucks from Cherokee County

Lumpkin County is celebrating the arrival of two "new" fire trucks. An MOU between the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners allowed the trucks to be donated to Lumpkin County after Cherokee County received new replacement vehicles. Lumpkin County, in turn, arranged to transfer two of their engines - one to Stephens County and the other to the City of Baldwin.

ACCG Visits Henry County to Present Several Awards

ACCG staff attended the Henry County Commission meeting this week to present several awards. ACCG Associate Legislative Director Kathleen Bowen presented Representative Andy Welch with a 2020 ACCG Legislative Service Award (pictured left). ACCG Leadership Development Director Jeff Christie (pictured right) presented Lifelong Learning Academy certificates to Commissioner Vivian Thomas, County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews and Deputy County Manager Brad Johnson and a 2020 special certificate for public safety to Commissioner Gary Barham. In addition, Jayden Williams (not pictured) was presented with a 2020 ACCG Youth Leadership Award.

Baldwin County Celebrates

Two Completed GDOT Projects

The Baldwin County Board of Commissioners, along with Sen. Burt Jones, Rep. Rick Williams, GCSU President Dr. Steve Dorman and Baldwin County Schools Superintendent Dr. Noris Price recently celebrated the completion of two important GDOT projects - a new traffic signal at Hwy. 49 and Blandy at Baldwin High School and a reduced conflict u-turn (RCUT) at GCSU West Campus Drive on Highway 441 S/GA-29. These projects will improve safety for the entire community at intersections with heavy traffic.

Jefferson County Receives Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund Grant

ACCG President and Jefferson County Commissioner Johnny Davis and other local officials recently participated in a ground breaking and grant check reception for the development of the Ogeechee Crossing Park. Jefferson County received a Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund Grant for $898,983 to develop the park, which will include nature and walking trails, camping, kayaking, picnic areas and an outdoor classroom.

Red Ribbon Week

Since its beginning in 1985, the National Red Ribbon Week Campaign™ has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. Today, the red ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
