State Record Blue Catfish Caught in Stewart County

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported this week that a new state record blue catfish was caught in Stewart County by Tim Trone of Havana, Florida. His catch weighed in at 110 pounds, 6 ounces, beating the previous record by more than 17 pounds. He hooked the fish from the Chattahoochee River during a fishing tournament on October 17. While blue catfish can reach weights of over 100 pounds, they typically weigh between one and twenty pounds in Georgia.

Edwin Nix Receives State Appointment

Congratulations to ACCG Board of Managers At-Large Representative and White County Commissioner Edwin Nix, who was recently named by Governor Brian Kemp to serve as the District 2 Region member of the State Soil and Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC). GSWCC was formed to protect, conserve and improve the social and water resources of the State of Georgia. Commissioner Nix also serves as the Director of the White County Water Authority.

Spalding County Highlights the Impact of CI Employees and Inmates

Spalding County has released a new video highlighting the impact that Spalding County Correctional Institute (CI) employees and inmates make in the community. The employees are unsung heroes in showing inmates what it means to have a second chance through education and job skills. Each day, more than 150 inmates provide over 1,200 man hours of service through roadside clean ups, maintaining county facilities and vehicles, cutting grass, preparing food and more.

Liberty County Expands Fire Services, Hires First Set of Full-Time Firefighters

The Liberty County Board of Commissioners has worked diligently to expand fire services over the past few years. Previously, the county's fire stations were operated by part-time and volunteer firefighters. Beginning in August and continuing through November, the county is hiring its first set of full-time firefighters. The county also has constructed several new fire stations that will be manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Dougherty County Dedicates Memorial to Tornado Victims

Dougherty County held a dedication ceremony this week for the Radium Springs memorial. This memorial commemorates the five lives that were lost in Radium Springs area during the January 22, 2017 tornadoes. The memorial features a 12-foot column with a steel wrapping that includes the names and birth dates of those who were lost in the storm.

High School Students Help Forsyth County Prepare for Nov. 3 Elections

Throughout October, high school students from various Forsyth County high schools have assisted the Forsyth County Board of Elections with preparing polling locations ahead of the November 3 General and Special Election. Students have spent their Saturdays sorting and packing COVID-19 supplies and preparing other needed materials that will be used at the polling places.
