New exhibition by legendary rock ‘n’ roll photographer Gered Mankowitz will be featured at Gibson’s new state-of-the-art flagship store in London, the Gibson Garage London.

A collection of classic and unseen portraits by renowned photographer Gered Mankowitz will go on display at the Gibson Garage London launching on Saturday, 24^th February. For over 50 years, Mankowitz has helped shape the iconic images of the music industry’s key players. The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, Jimi Hendrix, PP Arnold, Kate Bush, Elton John, The Jam, Eurythmics, Oasis, and many more have all looked down the lens of his camera.

Mankowitz was The Rolling Stones’ official photographer from 1965–67, producing iconic album covers, and capturing the band onstage, and at home.

Mankowitz: “The privilege of being around extraordinary talents like Keith Richards with his exquisite Gibson Hummingbird and Brian Jones with his astonishing Firebird guitar are moments to treasure and I will never forget how lucky I have been.”

Opening in London on 24^th February 2024, the Gibson Garage London is the ultimate guitar and music experience and features uniquely British cultural discoveries around every corner. It marks the first-ever Gibson flagship store outside of the U.S. and follows the successful opening of the Gibson Garage Nashville.

Mankowitz: “I am so pleased to be the first featured photographer to show my work at the amazing Gibson Gallery at the Gibson Garage London and delighted to have had the opportunity to put together such a varied selection of images from my archive.”

On Friday, 8^th March from 7:30-9:30pm the Gibson Garage London will host a special “In Conversation” event, with Gered Mankowitz and London’s “First Lady of Soul” PP Arnold. Attendance is limited, RSVP to [email protected] to attend.

About Gered Mankowitz:

Gered Mankowitz was born in London, England in 1946 to author, playwright, and film writer Wolf Mankowitz and his wife the psychotherapist, Ann Mankowitz.

Having displayed a natural 'eye' for photography whilst on a school trip to Holland, Mankowitz was inspired to take up photography by the actor Peter Sellers. Aged just 15 years old, acclaimed photographer Tom Blau offered Mankowitz an apprenticeship at Camera Press Ltd.

By 1963 he had opened his own studio on Mason’s Yard, London; it was here that he was approached to photograph Marianne Faithfull and was introduced to Andrew Loog Oldham.

In early 1965, Oldham asked him to photograph the Rolling Stones, who he also managed and produced. This was a major turning point in Mankowitz's career because from this first session came the cover for Out of Our Heads, and as a result, he was asked by the Stones to go to America with them on their record-breaking 1965 Autumn Tour.

For the next forty years Mankowitz continued to work in the music industry and his portraits read like a who's who of the key players at the time. Jimi Hendrix, PP Arnold, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Elton John, Slade, Kate Bush, The Jam, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Oasis, and many more, have looked down the lens of Mankowitz's camera.

His photographs are held in the collections of The National Portrait Gallery and numerous other international collections in Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Tokyo.
