New Collections Object: 1814 Hitt-MacDonald Bible

Donated by Mr. Robert MacDonald of Harrisonburg on January 12, 2023, the 1814 family Bible was originally owned by James W. Hitt, Great-Grandson of 1714 Germanna colonist Peter Hitt. Our Executive Director, Jennifer Hurst-Wender, visited Mr. MacDonald, a direct descendant of James W. Hitt, at his home to receive this treasured family heirloom. Mr. MacDonald has been a lifelong member and supporter of the Germanna Foundation. We cannot thank him enough for entrusting his family’s bible to us!
Mr. Robert MacDonald, a direct descendant of Peter Hitt, generously donated his family bible to us.
Inside the Bible are pages filled with birth, marriage, and death dates. These valuable family records allow us to learn more about the Hitt family.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jackie Cuyler, Archaeology Volunteer

Jackie is one of our very first archaeology volunteers! As an Archaeological Technician Certification student for the Archaeological Society of Virginia, Jackie helped the Germanna Foundation do salvage work in the early 1980s. She has been helping out with the site ever since. Jackie also recently donated some photos from the 1980s excavations which help archaeologists learn more about the archaeology that has taken place at the Fort Germanna / Enchanted Castle site. Jackie is an enthusiastic and hard-working volunteer and we are very lucky to have her. Thank you for all you do, Jackie!

If you would like to become a volunteer, please email us at foundation@germanna.org!
