Dear Friends,

Welcome to the start of a new program year of ministry moments at St Francis. September 13 is our “Get Re-connected Sunday”!  It will be the start of our new Sunday School program, the Youth Group, and, we shall have an awesome Fellowship event at 5pm!

Thank you to all who responded to the survey asking for your input on attending an outdoor worship service. I am excited that we can come together for a pilot outdoor in-person Sunday worship with Holy Communion on September 27 at 9am! We're already making preparations so that when the Los Angeles County and the Bishop allow for indoor worship in our church we can open as soon as practically possible after any announcement. Stay tuned for details regarding the 27th.

So…without further ado see below for information on our Fellowship event, and your first lesson for Sunday School this year.

AND…please come for the fellowship and strength of the Body of Christ in front of our church. See details below.

God is in all these adjustments, inspiring us to serve one another in new ways!

Get Re-Connected! Sunday Social Hour
Thus Sunday - September 13th, 5:00 - 6:00pm, Lower Parking Lot

Like everything else in this Covid-19 pandemic time, our Get Connected Sunday will be a bit different this year! For those that want to connect in person, you are invited to come as described above. We will have tables and chairs, properly spaced, where you can sit with your family or a couple of close friends. Reservations and masks are required and there will be sanitizer on each table. We will have 12 tables available with up to four chairs per table. Feel free to bring your own appetizer and beverage if you would like!

If you would like to join the Get Re-Connected Sunday Social Hour, you must make a reservation. Click this link to RSVP to Kathy Compton.

Please include your name and who you would like to include at your table;
For example, "This is Susie Smith and I would like to be seated with my husband and two children." Or, "This is Bob Brown - my wife and I would like to be seated with Sam and Sally Jones."

Due to pandemic restrictions we must limit the number of people that can attend, so reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

Also, we will need a couple of volunteers to help set up the tables and chairs before the event at 4:30pm. Please email Kathy if you can help with this! Thank you.
Be together - 5 days a week, as well as Sundays.
Morning prayer twice-weekly, led by Paula+, and Compline three times per week, led by Jude+ and a team of lay leaders. Each service includes the traditional service, plus words from the leader, and explanations of the readings. They are prayerful and quiet, a far cry from the turmoil of the world, and medicine to help us heal and be comforted and inspired.

ISAIAH … in (only) 5 Sessions !!!!!
This Coming Tuesday, September 15th, 7:00 - 8:30 pm, our Bible study of ISAIAH continues! Hooray!

Isaiah is quoted more times in the New Testament than any other book in the Hebrew Bible. Jesus reads from Isaiah (Isa 61:1-2) as he begins his ministry and then declares that,
“Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Lk 4:21)

Why Isaiah?
Isaiah is a beautiful, powerful, poetic, disturbing, wild, inspiring, important book,
and I invite you to join in the fun of engaging with this text!!
There are five sessions:

  • Sept. 15, 7:00-8:30pm - Second Isaiah 40-55; The Suffering Servant and Jesus; Servant Songs; Poetry and Music

  • Sept. 29, 7:00-8:30pm - Second Isaiah 40-55; Suffering then and now; More Servant Songs; Quotes to remember

  • Oct. 6, 7:00-8:30pm - Third Isaiah 56-66; Hope; A Restored Covenant; Leadership Gone Awry; Restoration of the Faithful

  • Oct. 20, 7:00-8:30pm - Back to the Beginning: First Isaiah 1-39; Who did they say God is? Who do we say God is?

Note from Rev Jude: I am not an expert, at all, on Isaiah. This class will need your questions, insights, former knowledge, or first-time observations to make the experience meaningful.

No experience necessary; all brains welcome.  Please email me before Tuesday and I will send you the zoom link.
