Getting Active with your Dog! An Introduction to Canicross Workshop
May 30th, 2015
at 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
|
| Go, Dog, Go... ...a crash(less) course in cani-cross basics. Saturday 30MAY15 4-6pm @ Tails-U-Win, Main Room Instructor: Megan Getchell (and canine assistant Jude, a border collie) Looking for a new way to get out and go with your dog? Have a pup with energy to burn? Want to experience life at the speed your dog wishes you would? Just love being outside with your K9? Come learn the basics of cani-cross and related dog sports. Cani-cross equals CANIne + CROSS-country. The dog wears a harness and is attached to the human partner's hip belt via a bungee line. Think sled dog without the sled. It can be done walking, hiking, or running and with little pulling or a lot. Cani-cross is also related to the "joring" sports of ski-joring, bike-joring, and scooter-joring where the dog pulls the human on various forms of transport. These activities started out as a way to train sled dogs off season or in places with no snow, but can be a lot of fun even if you never run a sled. Whether you have a budding running partner or love to hike with an experienced four legged partner cani-cross can give you a new way to enjoy the fresh spring air. |
This workshop will cover canine fitness basics, cani-cross safety, gear (from simple to fancy), and basic commands. We may even take a field trip. What to bring: a willing human, any size/shape dog, a 6ft leash (hands free leash if you have it), a well fitting regular harness (NOT no-pull), and motivating treats. Optional: a belt that your leash can be attached to, a crate for your busy pup to relax in while people figure things out. Check out the links below for a look at what Cani-cross is: The ever popular wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cani_cross This fun video by Rouge Dog in the UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6PWX9oRuQY&index=3&list=PLLnpN1ZvsArlVz1injkYP-_vLfph_Fgej A demo performed at Crufts in Great Britain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl33PCDrAtM A look at bikejoring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcpcFKxZgBY An example of a cani-cross set up: http://www.ruffwear.com/Omnijore-Joring-System |

| What happens in Family Dog II? How would it benefit myself and my dog? Pups finishing up the Puppy classes and the FD 1 classes have just started with the introduction to walking politely, have learned about staying in a position for a short period of time, have learned that responding to their names is valuable, are working on the emergency recall and have started a variety of behaviors that help them greet politely. They are also learning to work through some distraction and work on some tricks. In FD 2 we continue to work on the same behaviors - helping them become fluent under a variety of distractions, adding duration and building distance onto the behaviors. We work on doorway greetings, mat work, agility basics, retrieving, and prepare dogs for the Canine Good Citizen test.* |
We can individualize for each class and include things like body awareness, signal control, targeting with various body parts. We can set up situations that can offer real life situations like going to the vets, walking in the park, waiting while you open the door., the relaxation protocol. We can learn the Rally exercises, work on scent work and teach you to be better at training skills like shaping, capturing and how to use less food in your training by using play as a reinforcer. The classes that are offering FD2 are listed below in this newsletter. Some go the regular 8 week schedule and some are"ongoing" means that you can start the class at anytime. It means that new dogs may come in during your time while others may finish and go on to other classes. It is really important to keep up the training with your pup so your good start will keep growing. |
