We are pleased to announce the opening of our latest exhibition Closer, a solo show featuring new paintings by Catherine Graffam. Although she is only 27, Graffam has already made a big impression on the art world in New England and beyond through her compelling self portraits. This latest body of work marks a new direction for Graffam as her first portrait series to feature primarily people other than herself. Through paintings of her friends and loved ones, Graffam explores themes of emotional intimacy and queer love.
When Graffam first began making work for Closer, her goal was to move away from the deeply introspective self portraits that defined her early career. Instead of making work examining her own past trauma, Graffam wanted to focus on creating depictions of queer beauty and loving relationships. However as the COVID-19 pandemic set in, her desire to paint her loved ones took on a new significance under social distancing restrictions. Read more about how Graffam's new series of portraits developed here.

This week's Studio Visit is with artist Caitlin Duennebier, who works in a wide range of media from painting and drawing to sculpture and animation.
Although Duennebier no longer has access to her studio due to the pandemic, working from home has allowed her to pursue a project illustrating a story written by a friend, The Great Adventures of Sassafras and Mr. Hobo. Learn more about Duennebier and her latest projects here.
