First Peoples of the Southeast: Dual Gallery Opening
ArtFields will celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions as part of the First Peoples of the Southeast project in Lake City: 9|9: Art of the Native South at Jones-Carter Gallery and Bounded Space: Belonging to the Native South at TRAX Visual Art Center.
The exhibitions honor the enduring creativity, traditions and contributions of Indigenous artists throughout the Southeast. The opening celebration will also feature an Indigenous culinary experience by Chef Jamie Locklear, with dishes inspired by pre-contact, post-contact and contemporary fusion cuisine.
9|9: Art of the Native South features works from the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at UNC Pembroke, representing artists from tribal nations including the Lumbee, Catawba, Haliwa-Saponi, Eastern Band of Cherokee, Muscogee Creek and Nansemond.
Bounded Space: Belonging to the Native South explores the deep relationship between Southeastern Indigenous peoples and their homelands. Works incorporate materials such as rivercane, clay, stone, wood and pine needles, reflecting traditions and knowledge passed through generations.
Both exhibitions are curated by guest curator Nancy Strickland Chavis, director and curator of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at UNC Pembroke.
