Hello, friend! It's consecration month at Joyce Rodgers International. We have much before the Lord during this season, and of course, you are in our prayers as we seek the Lord for the coming year.
As we journey through this time of consecration, I just want to share with you a little wisdom on getting God's attention in prayer. Prayer is a powerful tool given to us by God for the purpose of building relationship and implementing His will in the earth. We are commanded to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). We are to pray always and not faint (Luke 18:1). Unfortunately, many have become discouraged to pray because they don't see results in prayer. Below, I offer a few nuggets on ;how to get God's attention in prayer.
What is Prayer?
In short, prayer is communication with God.
Why do we pray?
Prayer allows us to build relationship and partner with God. Prayer positions us to receive God's instructions, so His plans may be carried out in the earth.
How do we pray?
The way to get God's attention in prayer is to pray His Word. He watches over His Word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12). His Word is His will for our lives. He hears us when we talk His language! (1 John 5:14-15).
A few important things to remember to ensure success in prayer:
Confess Your Sin (Psalm 66:18 KJV) If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.
Check Your Motives (James 4:3 NLT) And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong-you want only what will give you pleasure.
Surrender Your Will (John 15:7) But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!
Ask in Faith (Mark 11:22) And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. Faith is the fuel for prayer. <--VERY IMPORTANT
Forgive Others (Matthew 6:14-15)
If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Remove Idols (Ezekiel 14:3) Son of man, these leaders have set up idols in their hearts. They have embraced things that will make them fall into sin. Why should I listen to their requests?
Pray the Word of God (1 John 5:14-15 KJV)
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
Love (Galatians 5:6) For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Jesus provides a simple model that we should use as our guide when we pray. It does not have to be word for word, but the components of this prayer should be implemented.
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. -Matthew 6:9-13
Lastly, "Prayer is not a head thing; it's a heart thing." The position of our hearts play a key role in prayer. Also, know that God is sovereign, and He will do as He pleases regardless of where we stand with Him. He ultimately knows what is best for us. When we don't see the desired results we must remember to be thankful.
Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT).
Blessings,
-J
