"I think the ability to work independently is more important than skill level. Once they learn the pattern, they can finish on their own and maybe get some of the 'Zen' feeling of the process. I truly stress that they don’t worry about perfectionism and take their time."
For youth in care, creative expression can sometimes feel blocked by self-criticism, fear of failure, or worry about outcomes. Zentangle gently removes that pressure. A male youth who recently worked with Debbie on his Tangle, said he felt "calm" at the end of class. The process encourages curiosity, focus, and creative flow, allowing participants to experience success and beauty in their art right away.
Debbie, who is also a certified yoga teacher, discovered Zentangle as a therapeutic practice in her own life and quickly realized its potential to support others. "I find that it helps me relax at the end of a stressful day and navigate the ups and downs of life," she explains, "and I want to share that sense of calm and possibility with others."
By combining art, reflection, and supportive instruction, Zentangle offers a simple yet powerful way for young people to slow down, build confidence, and discover the joy of creating.
