NEWS FROM THE CABOOSE

What in the world is "leaf peeping?"

"Leaf peepers" is an informal term for people who travel to areas of vibrant changing foliage in the autumn months. At the Basalt Chamber of Commerce Office & Visitors Center, we're already getting calls from vacation planners hoping to capture a perfect few days of vivid yellows, oranges, reds and purples along our already scenic roads. It's a little like timing the cherry blossoms in Washington, DC, but we happily share our best local tips any chance we get.

More than just a business resource

The Basalt Chamber of Commerce continues to develop as a resource not only for business vitality and development but also for visitors, newcomers, and those of us who are continually exploring all that's around us. As we grow so do the features on our website, which now offers a virtual library of information about the unique and compelling attractions in and around Basalt.

Information at your fingertips

Be in the know about the best time and place to view the Autumn's changing colors here. Read about more than a dozen of the best hiking trails for miles around, the level of difficulty and directions to road biking and mountain biking trails, and places you never knew to go campingThere's information on boating, sailing, kite surfing and paddle boarding at Ruedi Reservoir and nearby lakes and rivers, plus where to kayak and how to get rentals or take a guided trip. You'll discover the best "Off the Beaten Path" destinations for 4-wheelinggolf courses close by, where and when to fly fish throughout the year, and all you need to know to plan a hunting trip.

Of course there's plenty of information about nearby kid and family-fun activities listed in the "Adventures Galore" page of the our website. There are myriad things to do in Basalt and a wealth of information available to help you access the best of our community and outdoor treasures. Please take a look at these pages and share them with your friends and visitors. (Thanks to Board of Directors chair-elect Bill Simon of Symbion Design for his detailed work in providing all this useful info and photos.)

The beauty around us is so much of why we've each chosen Basalt as our home. It's also vital to the strength of our economy, tourism and overall quality of life. Supporting economic vitality means being stewards of this precious gift of nature and history. That's why we're continually looking at ways to protect and enhance these assets and develop our business community in a way that makes sense ecologically as well as economically.

Opportunities ahead

We're currently looking at opportunities for Scenic ByWays designation, participation in the Colorado Main Street Program, and simultaneously exploring grants and related funding for historic preservation and economic development. It's all a package and involves every aspect of thoughtful community design and business planning. Please consider joining one of our developing working groups and be a part of these important initiatives. More information on volunteering is available below and will be described in future newsletters.

Meanwhile, if you haven't noticed, we've added a new section in the newsletter call Basalt Bizness Buzz. Chamber members may submit any news of 35 words or less plus your contact info completely free. And don't forget you're also entitled to a free quarterly ad right here, and any additional insertion for just $20. It all goes out to more than a 1,000 readers a week.

How else can we help you? Just send us a note or give us a call and we'll put our creative heads together.

Warm regards,
Robin

THE BUDDY PROGRAM
Become a Big Buddy and Make a Big Impact!

You have a meaningful opportunity in front of you - to not only guide and inspire a youth today, but to transform their potential for tomorrow. And, your impact can directly strengthen our community. By giving a couple of hours, 3 to 4 times a month, you can give your Little Buddy the invaluable gift of friendship. As a friend, you can provide guidance and opportunities for your Little Buddy to learn and grow. By showing up, listening, and having fun, you can help change a young person's perspective for the better. Little Buddies are 6 - 18 years of age who are referred by teachers, counselors, or parents and are in need of companionship and encouragement. Big Buddies are responsible, caring individuals who act as a positive role model and advocate for their Little Buddy. Volunteer requirements include full-time, year round residents who are capable of committing to consistent contact with their mentee for a minimum of 1 year. The Buddy Program is especially looking for male mentors to work with children in the midvalley.

Two ways to get involved:
* Community Program: Buddy Pairs meet 3 to 4 times per month in the community to take part in a variety of activities, including free Buddy Program sponsored activities, like fly-fishing and cooking classes.
* School-based Program: Buddy Pairs meet weekly at the youth's school. This program is site-based and takes place during the academic year.

Visit www.buddyprogram.org to fill out a volunteer inquiry form and volunteer with an award-winning mentoring organization. Watch this short video to get inspired: http://youtu.be/5kI8KL5_Gok
