(WILSON, NC) – April 9, 2021 – Sallie B. Howard School of Arts and Science, a free public charter school located in Wilson, N.C., has announced that it will launch a high school athletics program beginning in the 2021-2022 school year.
Led by Athletic Director Rachelle Pierce, the sports program will begin this Fall with boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball and boys soccer. The Winter schedule will feature boys and girls basketball, cheerleading and wrestling. Boys and girls track and field and girls soccer will take place in the Spring. The teams will start off at the junior varsity level and form varsity teams as the high school’s student population continues to grow.
β€œThis is an exciting time for Sallie B. Howard School,” says Pierce. β€œNot only are we building a world-class high school academically, but now we have a unique opportunity to establish a sports legacy that generations of Sallie B. Howard alums can be proud of.” 
Pierce has coached sports and taught physical education at Sallie B. Howard for over 15 years. Under her leadership, the middle school boys basketball team made four consecutive trips to the PIAC (Piedmont Independent Athletic Conference) Finals, winning two back-to-back championships. Additional credits include two boys soccer PIAC championships, one girls soccer PIAC championship and a volleyball championship. She was named PIAC Athletic Director of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.
Sallie B. Howard High School opened its doors in August 2020 with a new facility and state-of-the-art biotechnology lab. The pre-professional curriculum offers majors in Biotechnology, Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Art. Veteran administrator Glenn Reaves serves as Principal.
