The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) will host their annual Fall 2025 Faculty and Staff Seminar on Monday, August 18, 2025. This year’s theme is “Growing the Pride: Charting the Course to Preeminence.” This event will take place in the Kenneth L. Johnson Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Complex, located on the campus of UAPB. Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 am, marking the start of a day filled with engaging activities. The seminar will kick off at 8:30 am with a welcome and opening remarks. It will conclude at 2:30 pm with closing remarks, leaving plenty of time for fruitful discussions and networking.

| | Lt. Col. Brian D. Waddy Named UAPB’s New Professor of Military Science | | |
Lt. Col. (LTC) Brian D. Waddy has been appointed as the new Professor of Military Science at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). He will teach leadership, tactics, and military skills to cadets enrolled in the programs. He will also serve as an Army Reserve Officer with the Golden Lion Battalion Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program.
The Golden Lion Battalion, part of the 5th Brigade, oversees the ROTC programs at UAPB, Henderson State University, and Ouachita Baptist University.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Aquaculture and Fisheries Department continues to advance the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service certified fish health inspection services and disease diagnostics under the leadership of Dr. Grace Ramena, according to Dr. Bruce McGowan, interim dean and director of UAPB’s School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences.
“The team plays a vital role of conducting fish health inspections and disease diagnostics for aquaculture stakeholders in Arkansas and nationwide. They ensure regulatory compliance with World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and USDA-APHIS standards,” Dr. McGowan said.

“We can mark the celebration by showcasing catfish across diverse culinary platforms – from traditional fish fries to innovative reinterpretations by local chefs,” he said.

Students at Watson Chapel Junior High School in Pine Bluff recently enjoyed a lunch of catfish they raised themselves, according to Dr. Karleah Harris, associate professor for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Department of Human Sciences. The youth grew the catfish in the school’s aquaponics system in which plants and fish are raised together in a recirculating water system.

| | Summer Aeration Can be Tricky for Fish Pond Owners | | |
Supplemental aeration can be beneficial for fishponds, according to Scott Jones, small impoundment Extension specialist at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Improvements to the chemical and biological condition of the pond can increase fish populations and extend the pond’s life.
“Although aeration is most often good, being too eager to set your new aeration system to full blast from the jump in summer could trigger disaster,” he said.
