Modest Gains for Women in the 2022 Midterms | |
In addition to the record 12 women who will serve as governors as a result of the 2022 elections, new records have also been set in recent weeks as results were determined in congressional and state legislative races.
- 149 (107D, 42R) women will serve in the 118th Congress, two more than the previous record of 147, set earlier this year. Women will hold 27.9% of seats in the 118th Congress.
- 124 (91D, 33R) women will serve in the U.S. House in 2023, one more than the previous record of 123, also set in 2022. Women will hold 28.5% of seats in the U.S. House in 2023.
- At least 2,386 (1,568D, 797R, 18NP, 2Ind, 1Prg) women will serve in state legislatures in 2023. This surpasses the previous record of 2,307 women in state legislative offices (set in 2022). If this count holds, women will hold at least 32.3% of seats in state legislatures.
- At least 585 (379D, 188R, 18NP) women will serve in state senates, up from the previous record of 564 set in 2022; they will hold at least 29.7% of state senate seats nationwide.
- At least 1,801 (1,189D, 609R, 2Ind, 1Prg) women will serve in state houses, up from the previous record of 1,747 set in 2022; they will hold at least 33.3% of state house seats nationwide.

Ready to Run® Returns LIVE in 2023! | |
Our flagship Ready to Run® program in New Jersey will return in person in 2023! Registration is now open to attend the two-day campaign training program, held on the Rutgers University–New Brunswick campus. The event kicks off on Friday, March 17th with our Diversity Initiative sessions ELLA Wins (Elections & Leadership Latina Academy), Rising Stars: Educating Asian American Women for Politics, and Run Sister Run: Women of the African Diaspora Changing the Political Landscape. The conference continues through Saturday the 18th with sessions on digital outreach, campaign communications, navigating New Jersey’s political parties, fundraising, and more. Accepting Applications for NEW Leadership® New Jersey 2023 | |
Applications are now open for our Susan N. Wilson NEW Leadership® New Jersey 2023 cohort! The 2023 program will take place June 8-13, 2023 at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This non-partisan, six-day residential program will give students the opportunity to meet women leaders, learn about women’s participation in American politics, and develop and practice leadership skills through panel discussions, workshops, and projects. NEW Leadership® New Jersey is open to students at all higher education institutions in New Jersey, and eligible applicants must be registered for the 2021-2022 academic year in either a two-year institution or be a rising junior or senior at a four-year institution. CAWP is committed to including students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and ethnic and racial identities in each NEW Leadership® program.
NEW Leadership® is our program devoted to helping young people deepen their political engagement and get involved in the fight to advance women’s leadership. It is CAWP’s investment in future generations of leaders.

Program Coordinator The program coordinator works collaboratively to innovate and drive the development, implementation, and evaluation of a range of public programs, special projects, and outreach efforts — like our Ready to Run® and NEW Leadership® programs. The person in this position is responsible for expanding our target audience, providing focused/appropriate educational opportunities, and developing relationships and managing partnerships with outside organizations to provide joint programs.
