Modest Gains for Women in the 2022 Midterms

In addition to the record 12 women who will serve as governors as a result of the 2022 elections, new records have also been set in recent weeks as results were determined in congressional and state legislative races.

  • 149 (107D, 42R) women will serve in the 118th Congress, two more than the previous record of 147, set earlier this year. Women will hold 27.9% of seats in the 118th Congress.
  • 124 (91D, 33R) women will serve in the U.S. House in 2023, one more than the previous record of 123, also set in 2022. Women will hold 28.5% of seats in the U.S. House in 2023.
  • At least 2,386 (1,568D, 797R, 18NP, 2Ind, 1Prg) women will serve in state legislatures in 2023. This surpasses the previous record of 2,307 women in state legislative offices (set in 2022). If this count holds, women will hold at least 32.3% of seats in state legislatures.
  • At least 585 (379D, 188R, 18NP) women will serve in state senates, up from the previous record of 564 set in 2022; they will hold at least 29.7% of state senate seats nationwide.
  • At least 1,801 (1,189D, 609R, 2Ind, 1Prg) women will serve in state houses, up from the previous record of 1,747 set in 2022; they will hold at least 33.3% of state house seats nationwide.
