Today, civic participation occurs at many levels. We make impactful decisions about our community every time we make a purchase, vote, post on social media and, of course, volunteer. We think any awareness we can bring to the many resources that might spur individual action for good, falls right in line with what we’re up to at HandsOn.

Helping Student Literacy One Bag at a Time

The HandsOn team traveled to Las Vegas to host the Altria Group's give-back project at their annual conference. The Altria volunteers made 320 of our Reading Rocks kits. Each kit contains 2 books, a decorative bookmark, and a Reading BINGO Challenge Card, all in a canvas tote bag made by the volunteers.

We are so pleased to have the opportunity to gift the 320 kits to a Las Vegas nonprofit, After School All-Stars! The kits were then distributed to youth to show them ways to make reading fun!

ASU's Community and Classroom Survey

If you work with students in a school classroom or anywhere else on a school campus, please take and share this 10-minute survey to inform ASU’s upcoming 2023 report, “Surveying Arizona's Educators: How Schools and Communities Connect”.

Respondents will have the option to be entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card in appreciation for participating.

The Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at ASU, through the Arizo na Community Educator Initiative, needs your help to understand the challenges schools and communities face when trying to build stronger connections.

They are asking for your help: Through a statewide survey, they aim to learn more about the relationship between schools and their communities, what challenges you encounter, and what kinds of partnerships are happening throughout our state.

Take Action to Improve Our Community

Arizona Department of Transportation needs your help!

The ADOT is seeking YOUR input on its latest program to improve and maintain the state’s highway system during the next five years.

The public can provide comments on the 2024-2028 tentative Five-Year Program by:

Attend the public hearing of the State Transportation Board on May 19 at 9 am
Complete an online comment form or email your comments
Call the bilingual phone line at 1-855-712-8530

The public comment period ends at 5 pm on June 1.

Save the environment on Earth Day!

Spend this Serve A Thon Earth Day doing your part in picking up trash and debris around downtown Phoenix.

Bring the whole family out on Saturday, April 22 from 8 am - 11 pm to help Keep Phoenix beautiful. Volunteers will be provided gloves, trash bags, and pickers as well as cold water and refreshments. For more information on how to show love to our planet this Earth Day check out our website.

Volunteer at your Favorite Festivals and Events

College Bound AZ is looking for volunteers to help carry out the most exciting festivals in the valley! College Bound AZ is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that helps underserved youth continue to secondary education to achieve their dreams. Here's how you can help:

Come on out to Riverview Park in Mesa for the 8th annual Sangria, Craft Beer, and Food Truck Festival! On Saturday, April 29th from 4 pm - 10 pm, College Bound AZ is looking for event volunteers that are ready to mingle and pour sangria at one of the 40 tasting stations throughout the park.

Or join the next day for Chicago Fest West Festival! On Sunday, April 30th from 12 pm - 10 pm at Riverview Park Mesa enjoy all things Chicago! The festival will include food, music, entertainment, sports, and fun. College Bound AZ is looking for volunteers to help manage the VIP attendant, stage area, kids zone, information booth, and more.

HandsOn History

We want to give a big HandsOn hug to AVNET for being dedicated volunteers to Serve-A-Thon for 30 years!

Since the beginning, AVNET volunteers attended the very first Serve-A-Thon (previously known as Make A Difference Day) in 1993 and have stuck with us ever since.
