The Lodge was irreparably damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and rebuilding efforts didn't begin until 2016 before being reopened in 2018. A proud leader in the Sustainable Tourism movement, The Lodge has a footprint of 21 acres and is set back over 200 feet further from the Gulf than before, allowing for more dune restoration and natural dune movement.
