4-H Mustanger Horse & Pony Show

Photo below: Gracie Ripperger

On July 9 and 10, Mustangers participated in riding, contesting and/or showing their horses from the ground in halter classes. A lot of work goes into showing a horse or pony and winning a ribbon at the 4-H Mustanger Show. One young club member, Mackenzie Eads, got up at 5 am to feed and brush the horse plus pack up her gear and get ready to show at 8 am at the fairgrounds. She had been practicing the previous night until 10:30 pm. She went on to win Beginning Showmanship class with a borrowed horse named Minnie. Mackenzie is a fourth grade student at Mt. Carmel Elementary School.

She now qualifies to compete in the Showman of Showmen event on Thursday night at the fair. Madison said that she is “excited” to show sheep and cattle in the Showman competition; she will ask her friends how to handle cattle, goats and swine.

Photo Right: Paityn Freese and her 19-year-old mare named Ellie were reserve champions in Advanced and Champion Showmanship. Both of these young women have been riding since they were young children and both attend Franklin County High School.

Festival Parade Photos

On July 2, the Metamora Volunteer Fire Department kicked off their annual firemen's festival with a parade. Everyone was invited to join. There were flag bearers, a large contingent of police, fire and EMS vehicles followed by cars, a few floats, golf carts, horseback riders and a carriage pulled by a horse named Winston. Every year, Grannie's Cookie Jars and Ice Cream Parlor has a float in the parade pulled by a big red Massey Ferguson tractor. Those on the float this year were saddened that Eva “Grannie” Fuchs was no longer with them. They missed her warm, welcoming smile. Go to Facebook for more festival and fireworks photos.

Allbrook Trial & Sentencing

18-Month Sentence for

Battery on a Child

On June 9, a local jury returned a guilty verdict against Lynn Allbrook, 51, of Fillmore, Indiana. Allbrook had been charged with Battery on a Child, a Level 6 Felony, as the result of an incident that occurred on September 5, 2020, at Haspin Acres Off-Road and Motorcross Park in Laurel. On June 28, Franklin Circuit Court Judge Clay Kellerman handed down an 18-month sentence for Allbrook—6 months in jail at the Franklin County Security Center followed by a year of felony probation.

At trial, the victim, who was only 8 years old at the time of the offense, testified. Allbrook, a complete stranger, was staying with her husband at an adjoining campsite. That evening, the victim and a few young friends were throwing tiny wood chips at a fire in the vicinity of Allbrook, who was sitting in a chair. Allbrook—who later claimed that the boys were throwing small rocks at her--exploded in rage and chased after them, eventually cornering the victim on the bed of a nearby pick-up truck.
