Get Your Boat Ready for Spring –
Essential Pre-Season Tips

Sure is some beautiful weather we’re looking at for the next few days.

But if you have lived in the mid-Atlantic region for more than a week or two, you know how crazy and quickly it all can change.

Heck, while we’re trying to enjoy temperatures in the 60s, the National Weather Service is calling for a decent cold front and a Sunday loaded with rain.

All that great news aside, it’s high time to get your ship in shape for when it feels good enough for you to start getting on the water.

The good folks here at Lynnhaven Marine are at the ready to take care of prep work and make sure the chances of miscues are as slim as possible.

QUESTION & ANSWER

QUESTION: Shouldn’t my outboard be fine after it overheated, since I shut it off after the alarm sounded?

ANSWER: The short answer is: it’s probably fine if it was a one-time occurrence — but that’s not always the case.

On a warm day, if your engine overheats and you shut it off, the water running through the block also stops. This means the engine will actually continue to heat up for a bit — similar to how a steak keeps cooking after you take it off the grill.

Multiple overheating events can lead to serious issues that might not show up right away, such as:

• Warped heads, causing cooling leaks
• Melted wiring, leading to electrical shorts
• Warped valves and other internal damage

Bottom line: Keeping a good impeller and thermostat in your engine is key to preventing overheating and extending the life of your outboard. Even if you stop the engine when you get an alarm, overheating can still cause long-term damage.

We recommend always changing your impeller and thermostat at the same time to keep your outboard running smoothly!

Diagnosing a Major Overheat on a
Mercury 300hp Verado V8

This month’s project was a challenging two-parter! We had a two-year-old Mercury 300hp Verado V8 come in for a 300-hour service. As part of the routine checkup, we took compression readings — they should have been around 225 psi per cylinder. But three of the cylinders were showing just 90 psi — a big red flag.

After getting the green light to dig deeper, we tore the engine down to find the problem. As you can see from the pictures, these new engines are highly sophisticated — definitely not a job for a beginner! We removed the powerhead and then pulled one of the heads to inspect the pistons and valve train.

At first glance, everything looked fine. But here’s the catch: the pistons aren’t supposed to wiggle back and forth. After a closer look, we discovered that the severe overheating had warped the piston rings, causing the compression to escape past the rings.

Stay tuned for the next update — we’ll be installing a brand-new powerhead!
