Save the Date: First Bank Reopening

We are so excited to announce that the First Bank is reopening on July 1, 2026!

Independence National Historical Park and Independence Historical Trust will hold a public ribbon cutting on July 1st to celebrate the multi-year restoration of a historic landmark that housed the nation's first federally chartered bank. The rehabilitation effort reflects a longstanding partnership between the National Park Service and Independence Historical Trust.

Exhibits in the building, on view until February 2027, will highlight the role of art and artifacts in American history and diplomacy. Developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of State and Drexel University, the exhibits feature items from U.S. embassies and the City’s Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University, including commemorative objects related to Philadelphia’s celebrations of the 1876 Centennial, 1926 Sesquicentennial, and 1976 Bicentennial.

Full news release here.

The First Bank will be open 11:00am to 4:00pm, Thursday through Sunday.

P.S. Don't miss out on other events happening during the First Bank's opening week, including the Red, White, and Blue To-Do and a 52 Weeks of Firsts Firstival!

2026 Faces of Philanthrophy

Last month, our Director of Development, Jonathan Burton, was honored by the Philadelphia Business Journal at the Partners in Philanthropy Awards as one of the 2026 Faces of Philanthropy.

For this milestone year, Jonathan has made sure Independence National Historical Park is ready for the national spotlight as Philadelphia takes center stage for all things 2026. Projects include the rehabilitation of the First Bank of the United States, the creation of a 40+ foot-long Join or Die Sculpture (which will complement the A250 National Time Capsule on Independence Mall) and planting 18 trees around the park!

(In)Visible Architects of Freedom Digital Archive

Last year, Kelli Barnes joined Independence National Historical Park as a Mellon Humanities Postdoctoral Fellow. During her time at the park, she created (In)Visible Architects of Freedom, a

database designed for students and educators that highlights primary sources about the growth of the Black American community in Lënapehòkink, now called Philadelphia, from the 1600s to the 1800s. It includes petitions, newspaper articles, letters, objects, friendship albums, and more.
