With the right treatment, support and resources, recovery is possible for everyone. September is National Recovery Month, so let’s get together and get talking about recovery.

As part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's lineup of events this month, Opioid Response Network partner organizations are hosting a webinar to share how we are supporting communities, fostering collaboration and changing discourse to increase access to recovery support services. We will share events happening this fall where community trainings and overdose response supports will be offered. We will highlight free educational resources and trainings available to help individuals and communities improve strategy and actualize plans. Join speakers from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, Mobilize Recovery and Black Faces Black Voices for a discussion on how we can help you help others. Register here.

Read and share these featured briefs on emerging topics from ORN partner organizations.

  • Concerns about Growing Presence of Nitazenes: Nitazenes make up a class of opioids estimated to be significantly more potent than fentanyl. Concerns around nitazene include its growing presence in the US, as well as its potential interference in ongoing overdose response and addiction treatment efforts. In response to this emerging threat, RTI International, in collaboration with ORN, has developed a brief overview to raise awareness and serve as a primer on the topic. Read here.
  • Medications for Opioid Use Disorders in Pregnancy: Opioid use disorder continues to affect an increasing number of pregnant people in the US. Associated morbidity is significant and includes both fetal and maternal risks. This report, from the American College of Medical Toxicology and developed in partnership with ORN, summarizes pregnant individuals receiving medications for opioid use disorder treatment that were seen by medical toxicology physicians. Peer-Supported Probation in New Mexico: A Model for Reducing Overdose and Harms from the Criminal Legal System

Thursday September 26, 2024 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET

Rio Arriba County, New Mexico has an overdose rate nearly four times higher than the state rate. To address this crisis, Rio Arriba County Health and Human Services (RACHHS) partnered with a district court judge to create a peer-supported probation program as an alternative to traditional probation for individuals who use drugs. Instead of jail or standard probation, participants work with a certified peer support worker and regularly engage directly with the judge, often outside of the courtroom. With more than 30 participants, the recidivism rate has dropped significantly compared to individuals not in the program. This webinar from the National Association of County and City Health Officials will showcase how this non-punitive, non-abstinence-based alternative to traditional probation centers participant-identified needs, emphasizes harm reduction, and values relationship building with both the peer and the Judge.
