As of writing this, Punxsutawney Phil just emerged from his den yesterday and failed to see his shadow, indicating that New England can expect an early Spring.
Like this meteorological marmot, we're also starting to think about Spring. Although our Annual Conference just ended last week, it's already time to shift focus to the Spring Meeting, as we're now
accepting abstracts for our 2020 Spring Meeting
.
The Spring Meeting will be the kickoff event for Jennifer Kelly Lachmayr's theme of her presidency: "Advocate. Act. Be the Change.", which she unveiled when she took the gavel and began her presidency at last week's Awards Ceremony and Luncheon. We encourage those who are submitting to consider this theme as they prepare their abstracts.
In addition to the Spring Meeting, we have an upcoming Poo and Brew and upcoming deadlines for Student Design Competition enrollment and Stormy Award idea submissions.
Check out the rest of the newsletter for more on committee news, details on upcoming events, and a summary of the 2020 Annual Conference. Until next newsletter, have a great month and we hope to see you at some of our upcoming events.
As always, we invite you to contact Jordan Gosselin at
jgosselin@newea.org
with committee news and updates you would like to share in future editions.

The Student Activities Committee is now accepting entry forms for the 2020 Student Design Competition. The Student Design Competition (SDC) is intended to promote a “real world” design experience for students interested in pursuing an education and/or career in water engineering and sciences. NEWEA Hosts 2020 Annual Conference & Exhibit
|
|
NEWEA's 2020 Annual Conference & Exhibit wrapped up last Wednesday after a very full four days of programming.
Once again this year, the Young Professionals Committee kicked off the event with their Young Professionals Summit on Sunday. More than 100 young professionals from the water and wastewater sectors of the industry gathered for a full day of networking, panel discussions, and a keynote on the importance of emotional intelligence in the industry by Dr. Claire Baldwin of CDM Smith.
The conference officially started on Monday with the grand opening of the exhibit hall, the first 11 technical sessions, and the Opening Session, which featured a keynote on encouraging innovation, gender equality, and change in the water industry. Also at the Opening Session, now Past President Ray Vermette formally announced NEWEA's merger with the Northeast Water Innovation Network (NEWIN), incorporating NEWIN as the Innovation Council within NEWEA.
Tuesday continued with another 12 technical sessions, a full day of exhibits, the Student Poster Competition, and the second annual Innovation Pavilion. The Innovation Pavilion featured exhibit booths from eleven of the most promising water innovators in New England, a Student Shark Tank Competition, and numerous panel discussions on water innovation in this region.
The final day at the Annual Conference featured the last nine technical sessions, a partial day of exhibits, and the Awards Ceremony and Luncheon, where Ray Vermette passed the gavel to 2020 President Jennifer Kelly Lachmayr.
Thanks so much to all of our attendees, volunteers, and sponsors for another successful year at the conference. We couldn't put on this event without your support!

We can't wait to see everyone in Boston next year, January 24-27, 2021!
