Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide (a form of vitamin niacin or vitamin B3), is important for healthy mitochondrial function and cellular energy production?

Niacinamide can also be used to prevent declining testosterone levels in men and women, and protects against stress by lowering cortisol.

Niacinamide is often recommended by Mohs surgeons to prevent skin cancer reoccurrence.

A Frontiers in Nutrition study found that dietary niacin was associated with a 23% reduction in risk of Parkinson's disease for each 10 mg increase in niacin intake. A separate Frontiers in Nutrition study found that subjects 20 years or older with the highest dietary niacin intake had the lowest risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. recent analysis of SAMe supplements sold on Amazon found 20 of 24 failed potency tests. Aman was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Get Your Gut Right

Steve: Getting your gut right is the key optimal health. One of the best ways to assess this is to do a comprehensive stool analysis. Here are three of the numerous measurements in our stool test that recently appeared in research.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

A quality stool test will screen for SIBO. This is important for many reasons. For example, studies from Frontiers in Nutrition and eClinicalMedicine found that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has been implicated in the progression of chronic liver disease.

Fecal Calprotectin

Calprotectin is a measurement of inflammation in the gut. This is included in high quality stool tests. According to a study from American Journal of Gastroenterology, calprotectin is useful in predicting the possibility of gastrointestinal inflammatory disorders such as ulcerative colitis.

Commensal Bacteria

Commensal is another word for beneficial bacteria. Any quality stool test should include an extensive screening of beneficial bacteria, including bacteria such as akkermansia muciniphila and roseburia. A study from Nature Microbiology found that akkermansia feeds on types of sugar found in the mucus in the digestive system that would otherwise be fed upon by pathogenic bacteria. Roseburia produces anti-cancer metabolites, according to a study from Frontiers in Nutrition.

This is why it is very important to know your beneficial bacteria, and not just to see if your levels are low. I occasionally see very high levels that warrant backing off super potent probiotic supplements.

For all the reasons mentioned above and more, please contact our office if you are interested in doing a stool analysis and having us analyze it afterwards.

Case Report UPDATE

Osteopenia & Osteoporosis

This case report concerns a group of female clients with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Their individual needs always differ, but the impetus for a consultation is very much the same. Many come to see Steve and Bonnie because they are concerned about their post-DEXA scan diagnosis, concerned about taking bone drugs, and want to know if there are alternatives.

The first thing they explain is that DEXA scans only assess bone mass. If you have a small frame, you are very often categorized with osteopenia right off the bat. However, unless the DEXA scan is accompanied by a trabecular bone score (TBS), which is very rare, there is no assessment of bone quality. Bone quality is just as important as bone mass. Many women with good bone quality and less bone mass never fracture.

If a DEXA with TBS is not available in your area, there are two blood tests to assess how well you are forming bone and resorbing bone to ascertain bone quality. If needed, we can lay out the possibilities for building, maintaining, and preventing breakdown of bone. In most cases, there is so much that can be done with diet and lifestyle. For the rare instance where medication is the only option, we know how to help you minimize the negative effects.

A client read the aforementioned and wanted to share this:

"In 2021 I did a DEXA bone scan and was told I had Osteoporosis in (left femoral neck). My doctor at the time prescribed weekly dose of Alendronate (a bisphosphonate). I did it for about a 1.5 years. I hated being on it - didn’t tolerate it well. After a visit with you in 2023, I dumped the Alendronate and started on a supplement combination you suggested.

I’m happy to report that I had a follow up bone scan at Northwestern yesterday and it came back with NO Osteoporosis at this time. So there was no regression from stopping the Alendronate med and switching to the supplements. In fact, the diagnosis changed from Osteoporosis to Osteopenia. Northwestern did both DEXA and TBS score (which was in normal range). I read the piece in your weekly newsletter on the importance of the TBS score as well as a DEXA scan. Thought you would like to hear about the positive impact you are having on my health! Anita"

Chiro Corner NEW!

Chiropractic Helps Muscles

Pubmed cited a study that investigated whether spinal manipulation could lead to changes in how the brain consciously and subconsciously controls the body. This is known as motor control of the nervous system, which plans, directs, executes and coordinates movement to muscles and joints.

In this study there was a control group and a group who received chiropractic adjustments. Two muscles were measured, one in the hand and the other in the calf. Chiropractic adjustments resulted in a 54.5% increase in the hand muscle and a 44.6% increase in the leg muscle. There were no changes in the control group.

These results are consistent with previous research findings of an increase in muscle strength following spinal manipulation. The authors of this study, imply that chiropractic may be beneficial to those who have lost tone of their muscle, suffer from muscle breakdown due to stroke or operations and to those active in sports.
