Happy New Year! We're so excited to be sending our first newsletter of 2020 to share all that's coming in the next month.
In particular, we're just three weeks away from our largest event of the year, the Annual Conference & Exhibit! Expected to attract more than 2,200 engineers, consultants, scientists, operators, and academics, this three-day event will include 32 technical sessions, over 200 exhibitors, student poster displays, and more.
Today is the last day to register at the discounted rate
!
Additionally, we'd like to share some exciting industry news from the previous month. Our Massachusetts Affiliated State Association, formerly Massachusetts Water Pollution Control Association, has changed their name to Massachusetts Water Environment Association. This change follows the lead of Maine Water Environment Association, formerly the Maine WasteWater Control Association, and supports our industry's effort to emphasize that our work involves producing clean water and returning it to the environment. Congratulations to all involved on this important name change!
We'd also like to congratulate our Water for People Committee on all of their hard work fundraising throughout the year. The committee recently donated the proceeds from their FY19 fundraising. Water for People received $9,617.13 to continue their mission of supporting the development of high-quality drinking water and sanitation services.
Check out the rest of the newsletter for more on committee news and details on upcoming events. Until next newsletter, have a great month and we hope to see you at some of our upcoming events.
As always, we invite you to contact Jordan Gosselin at
jgosselin@newea.org
with committee news and updates you would like to share in future editions.

NEWIN Hosts Water Innovation Awards Night and Gala
|
|
The New England Water Innovation Network (NEWIN) held its annual Water Innovation Awards Night and Gala on December 4th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The theme of this year’s event was “Catalyzing Innovation”. Over 75 attendees were treated to hors d'oeuvres and free museum access courtesy of sponsors Watts Water Technologies, Inc. and Heartland Water Technologies. NEWEA leaders, including President Ray Vermette and past Presidents Janine Burke-Wells and Howard Carter (pictured left, along with Marianne Langridge, Meg Tabacsko, and Danielle DiRuzza), joined NEWIN leaders Phillip Ashcroft, Chairman of the Board, and Board Member Roberto Vengoechea, to celebrate the accomplishments of water sector innovators and their innovations.
The Gala was an opportunity to reflect on the past year’s successes and recognize NEWIN members for their hard work and innovative creations. The 2019 award winners announced at the Gala were:
• Folia Water -- Water Quality Technology of the Year
• CrossTek Membrane Technology – Membrane Technology of the Year
• Resolute Marine Energy – Water Meets Energy Technology of the Year
• Watts Water Technologies – Sustaining Member of the Year
The MIT Museum was an apt location for celebrating innovation -- the Gala was held in the Mark Epstein Innovation Gallery. There was an exhibit about MIT graduate Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, an acclaimed boat builder from Bristol, Rhode Island, titled “Lighter, Stronger, Faster: The Herreshoff Legacy”. The main exhibit was called “The Polaroid Project: At The Intersection of Art and Technology” and there was another very interesting display of engineering as art titled “Gestural Engineering: The Sculptures of Arthur Ganson”. Between the awards and the museum exhibits, it was a truly inspiring evening.
Following a vote at NEWEA’s Annual Business, NEWIN will merge with NEWEA to become the new Innovation Council, chaired by Marianne Langridge. The Council plans to continue with NEWIN’s Pitch Nights and other events, including the annual Awards Night and Gala and the Innovation Pavilion.
