An Unlikely Trio: The Bond Between Avery, Bear, and Snickers
Fourteen years ago, a trio of unlikely pets began to come together. When Suzanne Piecuch Heinemann adopted Avery from KHS in 2007, she could never have guessed what her furry family would become...

“Avery was the first dog I had of my very own after moving out of my parent's house,” she said. “It was just him and I for a while.”

Sometime later, Suzanne found herself taking in another rescue animal. A small kitten, named Snickers, came into Suzanne’s furry-family after her friend, who had recently adopted Snickers from KHS, passed away unexpectedly.

Then, in 2010, Avery, Snickers, and Suzanne made room in their hearts for Bear, another loving cat. These three kindred spirits created a bond unlike most.
My Furry Valentine Surpasses Fundraising Goal
Thanks to your help, our most adorable fundraiser of the year (so far!) was a huge success! Nearly 200 supporters participated in this year's My Furry Valentine presented by Kitsap Propane. Animal-lovers from across the state sent e-cards to their family, friends, and special someone's to support shelter pets in need. Together, we shared the love and raised $8,000 for Kitsap Humane Society, exceeding our $5,000 goal and making this our most successful My Furry Valentine fundraiser ever!

Thank you to everyone who donated to this adorable fundraiser for the animals! A special thanks to our paw-some friends at Kitsap Propane for sponsoring this year's My Furry Valentine.
KHS Receives 36 Cats In Need from Midwest Transfer
On Wednesday, Feb. 24, Kitsap Humane Society took in 36 cats and kittens through our partners at Wings of Rescue!

Tiny kittens, young cats, and even seniors kitties were transferred to us from shelters and rescues in Tennessee and Mississippi that are currently experiencing the effects of recent winter weather as well as the pandemic.

“This was about the biggest load of cats I’ve ever transported,” said Pat Garrett, who has been involved in transfers at KHS for the last four years. “Once we brought them back to KHS, they were separated based on their health and age so they could receive the care that they need. Then we clean everything up and get ready for the next transfer.”

Upon arrival, the cats were assessed and provided critically needed medical treatment, including Lilo (orange and white cat) and Lake (orange cat). Lilo was born with one of her paws facing the wrong way, and Lake is suffering from several eye defects.

“My wife Ann and I have been fostering Lilo. When I heard about his condition, I knew I wanted to help. Lilo’s been doing really well and is getting along with our own cat too. Now I just have to convince Ann that we should adopt him,” Pat said, laughing.

Thanks to your support as well as dedicated KHS staff and volunteers, Lilo, Lake, and the other 34 cats will continue to receive the care they need!
Loving Rescue Takes in Senior Mare
Here at KHS, we strive to create a more humane community for all, no matter how big or small. At the beginning of this year, Katie, a 24-year-old mare came to us in need of extensive care. She was very underweight, her hooves were overgrown, and one of her hips appeared arthritic, plus she needed a dental float and filing.

Upon arrival, Katie’s personality won over many of our team members, and we knew she had plenty of life left to live! With the help of local partners, including Joseph’s Farrier Service, who trimmed her hooves for free, Clover Valley Veterinary Services, and an equine chiropractor, as well as daily enrichment from our staff and volunteers, Katie’s feeling like a brand new horse! And best of all, Katie found placement with a horse rescue that will ensure she’s well cared for, for the rest of her days! Plus, she's already made a friend (pictured above)!

While we don’t often see horses, KHS is committed to being there when pets and people need us. Thank you to our community and our partners for your lifesaving support! Happy Trails, Katie!
Adorable Adoptable
Meet Dominic!
Dominic is a three-year-old adorable pittie mix with the cutest up-ears and the smooshiest face! Dominic loves everyone he meets, and he will always greet you with a smiling face and wagging tail. Dominic enjoys playing fetch with a tennis ball or tossing around a plush squeaky toy for himself. He is a big cuddler, too, and will lean up against you for butt scratches. Dominic is looking for a special home, as he seems to have a degenerative joint disease that has led to an ACL tear. He is looking for an adopter who is committed to keeping him comfortable as he ages. Dominic is eligible for foster to adopt so that KHS can support his new family with his initial medical treatment. If Dominic sounds like the perfect addition to your family, submit an adoption application to adoptions@kitsap-humane.org!
Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Margaret Poshusta!
Humble, steadfast, and passionate are just a few words that come to mind to describe Margaret Poshusta. In her more than nine years of dedicated service, she has contributed over 3,000 hours of care, education, and support. Margaret has shown up as a true leader within our feline program, co-writing most of the protocols still used today and teaching countless volunteers within our shelter.

One of the most remarkable traits about Margaret is her dedication to our cats. Each week she silently collects the cat hidey beds and toys that need to be washed and brings them home to clean them more delicately. Many aren't aware of the level of care that she takes in making sure our kitties then have clean and safe extras during their stay with us.
Additionally, through multiple garage sales of her own, she has managed to raise over $10,000 in funds that she has given back to the shelter. Not one for praise or accolades, Margaret is often quiet about all the work she has been able to accomplish in her time with us, but it is volunteers like her that help us to continue the lifesaving work we do daily. A million thanks to you, Margaret!

Meet Mandy Avila!
Meet Mandy Avila, one of our lifesaving Veterinary Technicians! As a KHS team member for almost nine years, Mandy joined the shelter assisting in animal care and receiving before finding her home in veterinary services.

“Mandy is very passionate and giving - always lending a hand to her teammates," said her manager. "With her depth of experience, Mandy plays a key role in taking care of our critically ill patients. She monitors everyone closely for improvements and is quick to alert the vets with any concerns.

“Mandy also plays a key role on our surgery team and has assisted in the spaying and neutering of thousands of dogs and cats throughout the years, in addition to other more complicated procedures.”
When Mandy isn’t working a shift at the shelter, she’s at home fostering pets who need specialized care and working to reunite lost pets with their owners!

We’re so lucky as a community and an organization to have Mandy as a dedicated member of our team. Thank you, Mandy!
