Seeking On-Call Volunteers
Do you love what we do at the 'Lift?
Do you want some active relief from your daily routine?
We are looking for able-bodied volunteers to assist with donation pickups and small deconstruction projects. Donation pickups involve loading salvaged materials and bulky items onto our trucks, sometimes in less than optimal conditions.
Deconstruction projects may involve use of hammers, pry bars, power drills, and sawzalls (depending on experience) for the removal of interior trim, flooring, doors, cabinets, and other nonstructural items.
A strong back, the ability to lift 40 lbs repeatedly, steel toed boots, and a sunny disposition are required. Construction experience for deconstruction tasks is preferred.

Forklift Materials Help Bring the Spirit of the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial to the Anacostia Community
An amazing mural was recently completed in SE DC as a part of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site's celebration of Douglass' birthday. Local journalist and historian, John Muller, sought to involve the local community and bring the spirit of the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial to the streets he walked and neighborhood he called home.
|
Rebeka with Nettie Washington Douglass, an anti-trafficking activist and Frederick Douglass' great granddaughter. |
Working alongside John was Rebeka Ryvola; the artist and co-creator behind the mural, who sees the project as both honoring Douglass and "celebrating the lively community of Anacostia...just one block away from [Douglass' Cedar Hill house]." A neighborhood that "grapples more visibly than most places with the challenges Douglass worked so hard to address."
Rebeka and John sourced some of our "oops" paint and eco-friendly Amazon Paint to create the base of the mural for the ground and rolling green surface of Cedar Hill. We are honored to have played a part in this meaningful project. To read more about it, visit our blog.

Forklift Sponsors Local Expression of Female Voices
In honor of Women's History Month, Forklift is proud to sponsor
Color Story Creative's art installation
HER STORY. The show, which opens Saturday, March 24th at 6 PM in Hyattsville's
Studio SoHy, uses the power of female creativity to celebrate and amplify women's voices.
HER STORY is the collaborative effort of Betsy Martin, Krissi Humbard, and Bronwyn King, three female artists examining
the current arc of the female narrative, and aiming to uplift and empower.
Attendees can expect mural walls, large scale fiber displays, and
interactive pieces inviting viewers to share their stories.
Prior to the opening, a panel of local female business owners will discuss their successes and challenges. The panel will begin at 4 PM at
Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, followed by a meet & greet social at 5 PM in
CAMPspace.
Tickets for the panel and meet & greet portion of the evening are
available here
.
HER STORY, open from 6-9 PM on March 24th, is free to all. The show will stay on view through late spring.
March 30 - April 15, 2018
Our long-time community partner, Joe's Movement Emporium, is excited to present
this series of dark, comic vignettes, showcasing Femmes Fatales and fedoras, trench coats and torch songs, intrigue, suspense and shadows. The program is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, and features the six players of Happenstance Theater in a virtuosic display of physical comedy, object manipulation, and period style; music played on multiple instruments; and characters costumed in vintage clothing.
