Lake Cushman Wildfire Sees
Significant Growth, Prompts Evacuations
| | |
Published in The Kitsap Sun, July 30, 2025
Image: WA DNR
The Bear Gulch Fire burning near Lake Cushman crossed the North Fork Skokomish River on July 29, triggering new evacuations and widespread trail and campground closures in Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest.
Fire activity has increased significantly in recent days, according to the incident’s public information team. On July 30, the fire was 8% contained and had burned an estimated 1,989 acres. Last week, it was reported at 19% containment.
Evacuation orders, advisory issued
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office issued a Level 3 “GO” evacuation order for the Staircase Campground area and surrounding properties north of the causeway at Lake Cushman. That means residents and visitors in the area are being told to leave immediately.
Areas south of Dry Creek are under a Level 1 “READY” advisory, meaning people should be prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen. Officials urge residents to pack emergency supplies and review evacuation plans.
Fire intensifies near Lake Cushman as crews battle rugged terrain, hot windy conditions
The fire began on July 6 on the north side of Lake Cushman near Mount Rose and is believed to be human-caused. No structures have been reported damaged so far, according to the statement.
Fire behavior has intensified in recent days due to steep slopes, dense vegetation and hot, windy conditions. Officials say the fire is spreading through tree canopies and throwing embers ahead of the main blaze, making it difficult to contain.

| | Business News & Resources | | Seattle Metro Tops U.S. Inflation Rankings | | |
Published in Washington Retail Association
The Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma region is experiencing the highest inflation pressure among major U.S. metro areas, according to a new WalletHub report. The analysis compared Consumer Price Index data across 23 metropolitan regions, highlighting short and long-term inflation trends.
In the past two months alone, prices in the Seattle area rose 1.4 percent. Year-over-year, overall inflation hit 2.7 percent, with food prices increasing 4.8 percent and energy costs climbing 5 percent. The largest recent increases were seen in food and restaurant expenses, along with gasoline prices.
Seattle’s rising inflation may be influenced by a range of economic factors. These include higher wages, such as the city’s current minimum wage of $20.76, and recent changes to state gas and diesel taxes. Washington residents also face some of the nation’s highest grocery prices, ranking fourth in the U.S., behind only California, Nevada, and Mississippi.
Experts note that broader forces like federal spending and economic overheating also play a role. While debates continue around potential future tariffs and policy impacts, current inflation is being driven more by consumer demand and supply pressures than by any single political factor.
Retailers and consumers alike are encouraged to monitor these changes as the region continues to navigate an evolving economic landscape.

U.S. Announces Higher Tariffs
on Dozens of Nations
| |
Published in The Seattle Times, August 2, 2025
New tariff start date: Last week, President Trump announced far-reaching new tariffs on the imports from dozens of countries that remain without trade deals. The higher tariff rates — which range from 10% to 40% — will go into effect Thursday, Aug. 7.
Trade deals signed so far: The U.S. has reached agreements with the UK, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, the European Union and South Korea. Trump granted a 90-day extension to Mexico to land a trade deal, while keeping the current 25% tariffs in place.
Impacts in Washington state: The on-again off-again trade talks continue to create uncertainty for businesses and consumers in trade-driven Washington, The Seattle Times reports.
-
The U.S. increased the tariff on Canadian goods to 35%, which took effect after midnight on Friday. Products covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement are exempt. Canada is Washington’s largest trading partner and #1 buyer of products like apples and cherries.
-
China, a major market for Washington farm and seafood exports, faces potential higher tariffs and could retaliate, the Times reports. In May, the U.S. and China agreed to pause most sky-high tariffs for 90 days; that trade truce will expire Aug. 12 unless the sides agree to extend it.
- Border crossings by Canadians into Washington and container volumes at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma remain down (though both have partly recovered since the spring.)

High Temperatures and Wildfire Smoke May Trigger Protections for Workers
| | |
Be Prepared
Hot temperatures and wildfire smoke are making for hazardous conditions for outdoor workers in our state.
The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is reminding employers and workers of the rules to protect workers and what weather conditions trigger extra precautions.
The state heat rules include protections for outdoor workers that kick in at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with additional requirements in the kind of high heat that much of the state is currently experiencing.
State rules require employers to prepare in advance to protect workers from wildfire smoke by putting together a response plan. They must plan for how they’ll communicate with workers, train employees to report smoke, and coordinate medical treatment for employees who say they’re experiencing symptoms like shortness of breath, nausea, chest pain and dizziness. They also must inform their employees of their right to medical care without retribution.
Employers can use indexes like the NowCast Air Quality Index (AQI) to track air quality. As air quality gets worse, employers must provide increasing protections.
Go online to learn more about L&I’s heat rules and wildfire smoke rules.

What the One Big Beautiful Bill Act
Means for Charitable Giving
| | |
Published in Nonprofit Pro, date July 28, 2025
Photo: Getty Images/Andrey Denisyuk
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act became law on July 4 and buried in its language is a provision that could have real implications for how everyday Americans — and high-net-worth individuals — give to charity.
For the first time in years, Americans who do not itemize will be able to deduct charitable contributions: up to $1,000 for individuals and $2,000 for married couples. Prior to this change, unless your total deductions exceeded the standard deduction threshold — somewhere in the mid-$20,000s for couples — your charitable gift wasn’t tax deductible.
This is a meaningful shift when you consider that the majority of donors, in terms of raw numbers, are non-itemizers. In my view, this change, which goes into effect for the 2026 tax year, is less about incentivizing new giving and more about bringing existing giving back into the fold of formal philanthropy. Last year’s hand-wringing over a donor dropoff missed the mark: People didn’t stop giving, they just gave differently — through GoFundMe, Facebook fundraisers and other platforms where a tax receipt was an afterthought, if one existed at all. This bill, in part, is about regaining visibility into those dollars and behaviors.

| | Kitsap Mall Redevelopment Could Bring Restaurants or Hotel, Management Says | | |
Published In the Kitsap Sun, July 31, 2025
Image: Meegan M. Reid/Kitsap Sun
Big changes are possible for Kitsap Mall. Raising Cane’s, Shake Shack and Valvoline all could join the Silverdale shopping center in the near future, according to Pacific Asset Advisors, which manages the mall’s leasing.
Of those, only Raising Cane’s has taken a concrete step, with a building permit filed with Kitsap County earlier this year, records show. No permits or construction timelines have been set for Shake Shack or Valvoline.
The property’s new owners, Rhino Investments Group, which acquired the Kitsap Mall for over $25 million in January, had already begun these projects when PAA took over leasing the mall, said PAA vice president John Viacava in an interview with the Kitsap Sun.
"As far as we know, they're still moving forward, but I don't have a specific update or timeline," he said. "They might still be in that contingency period before the deal becomes real."
Leasing materials from PAA show four proposed pads in the parking lot where new construction could occur, ranging from 0.71 to 0.92 acres. Two of these could potentially be a location of Raising Cane's or Shake Shack restaurants.
