Getting a Job and Keeping It

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. When people with disabilities are employed, their lives are better, the workforce is more diverse, and communities are stronger.

Unfortunately, the percentage of people with disabilities working (38%) is significantly lower than it is for people without disabilities (77%).

Despite these low numbers, many people with disabilities overwhelmingly want to and can work. Some people may just need an accommodation, a little support, or a barrier removed. If you have a disability and want to work, we may be able to help.

Resources to Help You Advocate for Your Rights

Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) has employment-related resources that can help you learn about your rights at work so you can advocate for yourself:

DRTx Programs and Services

In addition to providing resources, DRTx also helps people with disabilities with employment issues.

  • Our Client Assistance Program (CAP) can help you get services from Texas Workforce Solutions-Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VR) so you can get a job and live independently.
  • Our Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security (PABSS) program can help you find a job that allows you to keep your benefits.
  • We also work to protect the rights of people with disabilities in the workplace, including ensuring employers don't discriminate against someone because they have a disability.

To get connected with any of the services we offer, you can apply for services with DRTx.
