August 2022
From the Director

Dear Friends of ABM,

Wow, what a hot summer we've had here in the Pacific Northwest! While the rest of the nation seems to be getting a lot of rain, we have been very dry. This has given us many days to get outside and enjoy family celebrations, potlucks, hiking on great trails, and simple, quiet times to curl up with a good book out on the back patio. As for my family, we have been spending the time moving and getting our old house on the market.

I look forward to the changing of the season, and getting a little cooler, It was so great to see many people at the potluck. We missed some of you that were unable to attend, and hope to see you at our holiday party, date to be determined.

As many of you know we now have a year contract with John Knox to be able to stay in our office. That said, we also have rent for the first time in 41 years and could use your help each month to cover the new cost ($430).

I recently took some exciting classes at the Non-profit Marketing Summit. I learned a lot and can’t wait to use my newfound skills to market and grow AUDIOBOOK Ministries.

In closing, I would like to share a Bible verse that strengths me:
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8)

Yours in Christ,

Laurie van der Roest

Summer potluck
Thank you to all that were able to come to our summer potluck.

Volunteer Spotlight
Roger Neubauer

I started narrating books for ABM (then Tape Ministries NW, TMNW) 24 or more years ago. I have been retired from Boeing for 22 years now after working there for 39 years. My wife Joy and I had been going to John Knox Presbyterian Church (JKPC) for some years at that time. I had volunteered to make tapes of Sunday services. I had also heard about the affiliated TMNW effort to produce recorded wholesome and faith-based books for those who are vision-impaired or have other difficulties which make it difficult for them read books.
When I started reading/recording books, ABM readers were using portable analog recorders to record at home, and the “listeners” were using cassette tape players. At the time, I was traveling a lot for work and did most of my recording in the evenings when off on business trips. Sometimes this involved interesting situations, such as spending evenings in a closet to get relative quiet for recording during a multi-day violent storm in Florida.
Since then, I have been on the ABM Board for some time and helped to improve our operations. We went through a multi-year process to convert to the Library of Congress digital recording format; we went from recording in booths at the ABM facility, to streamlining operations with the narrators reading/recording at home on their computers. Along the way I have trained most of the current readers, although most now have better computer skills than I have.
And we have sort of returned to our roots moving into JKPC facilities.
We need your help. We are looking for people experienced with financial planning, fundraising, and marketing; a lawyer would also be helpful. If you only have a few hours or tons of time, we need you at AUDIOBOOK Ministries to help us grow and serve. Email me at lvanderroest@audiobookministries.org
or call the office at 206-243-7377.
