Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario (EAPO) proudly celebrated National Volunteer Week, April 16- 22, 2023. This annual acknowledgement is a special time for EAPO, where we continue extend our appreciation to volunteers with whom we engage daily, honoring their fundamental contributions towards promoting older adults’ rights, dignity and respect in communities across Ontario.
This year’s theme, ‘Volunteering Weaves us Together’', highlights how crucial volunteering is for the well-being and liveliness of our communities, as we engage in interconnected efforts to assist one another. EAPO recognizes volunteer contributions of the Elder Abuse Prevention Networks, and local, provincial and national agencies and organizations supporting seniors and caregivers for sharing their time, talents, and energies to support to ensure seniors stay safe, have a strong voice and feel respected.
We look forward to our continued collaboration in creating a strong, interconnected, vibrant and safe communities for seniors in Ontario!

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2023 | |

On June 15th, we’re hosting a free national webinar event for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
This is the main event of WEAAD—a not-to-be-missed interactive experience that brings together a panel of experts, political figures, advocates and concerned people like you to engage in an inspiring discussion about how we, as a country, can end elder abuse and protect the rights of older people.
The event features an all-star lineup of speakers, including some very special guests. We will be announcing the lineup soon.

Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario, in collaboration with local Elder Abuse Networks, community organizations and businesses will be planning WEAAD activities across the province to mobilize community action to promote the rights of older adults!
EAPO has created a WEAAD Toolkit of resources and materials to support you in planning events, designing educational and promotional materials for awareness activities, promote your WEAAD events using WEAAD logos, available in French and English, or simply supporting this year's campaign, "Rights Do Not Get Old" using the Social Media Templates and hashtag #WEAAD2023.

On June 1st of each year, people of all ages across Canada come together to celebrate Intergenerational Day. This day promotes the knowledge and cultural exchange between different generations as well as fosters healthy relationships among seniors and young people in the community. There are many ways to celebrate intergenerational day – small gestures like asking about a seniors’ day or bigger events like a PROVINCIAL TEA PARTY!

EGALE - Fostering Dialogues
This arts-based action research project brought together LGBTQ older adults and PSWs from Ontario in a virtual 12-week arts & dialogue program. This program explored themes of home, care, and futures of community-based care through facilitated conversations, art-making, and co-creation of a digital mural.

Residents’ Bill of Rights: Your rights if you live in a long‑term care home
In Ontario, long-term care homes must follow a law called the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, which includes a Residents’ Bill of Rights. This resource explains these rights in language that’s easy to understand. It lets residents know what they can do if their rights are not being followed and includes a list of places that give legal help and information.

A total of 18 women were killed this year, it is time for action and investment to stop the violence against women. Preventable deaths will continue to climb if action is not taken.

Slowly, a growing number of municipalities have declared and acknowledged violence against women as an epidemic, informed by the recommendations repeated in death reviews and inquests for the past thirty years. But there is aneed for new investments in prevention at the local level for VAWCCs, Elder Abuse Prevention Networks and Community Coordination which are fundamental to prevention and community safety.
