Healthy Together Now is a community-led grassroots program to help prevent chronic diseases in Manitoba. The program is coordinated by the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority and supported by the Province of Manitoba, Mental Health, Wellness and Recovery/Health Promotion and Wellness Branch.
Projects that address the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and a Health Equity Approach in their written HTN application form will receive priority for funding. To learn more about the Social Determinants of Health & Health Equity, watch this video:
The Social Determinants of Health describe the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age - such as housing, food, income, natural and built environments, social safety net and social inclusion. Read more here: social determinants of health. Using a Health Equity approach in your HTN project will seek to remove unfair and avoidable barriers to heath for priority populations.
Community organizations will be able to apply for funding for prevention activities in the areas of:
• healthy eating and access to healthy food
• physical activity
• commercial tobacco prevention and reduction
• mental health and well-being
Limited funds will be available this fall. Awarded funds are to be used within a year.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Source: canada.ca
The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. This federal statutory holiday was created through legislative amendments made by Parliament.
Wear orange
Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.
Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

September is Arthritis Awareness Month
Contributor: Andrea Dell, Community Wellness Facilitator with the Interlake-Eastern RHA
Arthritis is a complex condition that affects 1 in 5 Canadians. For many it can be debilitating, limiting mobility and increasing one’s risk for falls. Arthritis is not a single disease, but refers to roughly 100 conditions affecting joints. Common symptoms of arthritis include joint inflammation, pain, stiffness, and diminished range of motion. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, may come and go, and can affect one or several joints. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage between the bones wears away, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy joint tissue.

World Suicide Prevention Day - September 10
Source: suicideprevention.ca
World Suicide Prevention Day is a chance for everyone to join us in promoting awareness about suicide: those impacted by a suicide attempt or loss, family and friends, charitable organizations, professionals, politicians, volunteers, and community members.
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”. The aim of the theme is to raise awareness about the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide and transforming how we perceive this complex issue. Changing the narrative requires systemic change. It’s about shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. ~ International Association for Suicide Prevention

Understanding Vaping: Why Teens Turn to Vaping for Stress and Anxiety Relief
Contributor: Harper Johnson is a fourth-year nursing student at the University of Manitoba, MANTRA’s community practicum placement program.
Many teens and young adults view vaping as a quick and accessible way to cope with their stress. Unfortunately, this perceived stress relief is often temporary and does not address the underlying causes of stress like school, social dynamics, and home life. This creates a cycle of use which can worsen the feelings of stress.
While nicotine may provide a short-term sense of relief, it can also lead to an increased stress response in the long run.
