APRIL 2024

Principal Message

Winnequah Families,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing Spring Break!

Spring weather is definitely upon us and Severe Weather Awareness week is later in April. We will be having our tornado drill with students later this month. Also, please keep an eye on the weather and send weather appropriate clothes with kids to school. While we are all ready to put away the hats and gloves, we may still need them a few days yet this year.

Spring also means many kids will be walking and biking to school again. Please be extra cautious if you are driving students to school to watch out for our students who are sharing the road with you. If your child is walking or biking, please remind them to walk their bikes when they are on the path or sidewalks to avoid a collision with other students and families who are walking.

Finally, we are so lucky to have an amazing and supportive WSFO at Winnequah. We have a few very fun events coming up this spring that families should put on their calendar. First, we have WSFO Culver’s Night on April 16th from 5 to 8. Plan dinner at Culvers to support our WSFO and Winnequah School. Also, each spring, our garden parents spend a day getting the garden ready for our students to plant, weed, and ready the garden for growing. Please join us on April 27 for this work day to help rake, get the planting beds ready, clean up the garden area, mulch, and more! This is a family event, so bring the kids and your garden tools and enjoy the day in our school garden! Please see more information in the WSFO newsletter below.

Happy Spring, everyone!

In Appreciation,

Angie Fassl

Solar Eclipse Information

On Monday, April 8, a partial solar eclipse–when about 87% of the sun will be covered by the moon–will be visible across Wisconsin. While this is a fun and exciting event with plenty of learning opportunities, student safety is our priority!

In our area, the eclipse will start around 12:50 pm; this means that 3-5 grade afternoon recess will be indoors or modified. The maximum portion of the eclipse will take place around 2:06 pm (and last about 2 and a half minutes), and the eclipse will be complete by 3:20 pm.

In order to keep everyone’s eyes safe, students in grades 4K-2 will not have an eclipse viewing. If you have a student in grades 4K-2 and want them to view the eclipse, you are welcome to pick them up from school for that time. Please let our school office know if you plan to do this.

Students in grades 3+ may have the opportunity to view the eclipse depending on their school schedule and what their teacher has planned. In order to avoid injury, any student viewing the eclipse must wear appropriate eye protection in order to view the eclipse.

Some families have offered to donate eclipse glasses to classrooms. Any donations of glasses to classrooms in grades 3-12 must meet the ISO 12312-2 (sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015) international safety standard. Filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant not only reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels but also block all but a tiny fraction of solar UV and IR radiation.

Please talk with your student about the importance of keeping their eyes safe and protected during the eclipse on Monday and never looking at the sun without appropriate eye protection.

Cookies and Connections

We invite all Winnequah Families to join us for Cookies and Connections on Thursday, April 11th from 2:50pm-3:30pm on the Winnequah main playground. This informal social event will give caregivers and their students a chance to connect, play, and enjoy a treat. Younger children are welcome, but be aware that childcare is not provided. Please note that this event is weather-dependent. We hope to see you there!

Winnequah Fine Arts Night

Thursday, May 2nd - 5:00 - 7:00 pm

We invite you to visit Winnequah School to view the finest artwork of Monona’s Kindergarten through 5th-grade students and to celebrate their accomplishments as young artists. A wide variety of student artwork will be on display throughout the building that evening, and everyone has so much to be proud of!

  • Our Library will be open with activities for all ages.
  • The Monona Public Library will have information about their summer programs.
