City of waterloo neighbourhoods: strong and connected.

Show love to your local park!

Parks make our community shine. Show your neighbourhood park some love with a little act of kindness—these fun projects are a great way to start!

Consider organizing an Earth Day Community Cleanup and help remove litter from parks and trails in Waterloo. It's a great way to spend the day outdoors while connecting with neighbours.

You can also help enhance your neighbourhood park by:

  • Planting a pollinator garden or living fence buffer.
  • Managing invasive plants in natural areas
  • Starting a community message board or little library

We'll support you every step of the way! Learn more about community programs in parks.

Lead a neighbourhood Jane's Walk

Jane’s Walks are tours that make space for people to observe and reflect on places they live, work and play. They're an excellent way to build community connections and strengthen your neighbourhood!

Consider planning a walk for you neighbourhood - the Jane's Walk team can help you with your idea and provide guidance.

Two children waving from window of school bus

🙂 Smile corner 🙂

A neighbour shared this heartwarming story:

"There's a scene that plays out every weekday morning in front of our apartment complex. About a dozen parents walk their children to the school bus, hug them as they get on the bus, and all wave goodbye as the bus drives away. It's a beautiful scene of diversity, love, and community. I am so touched by it. I sometimes walk my dog during this time so I can observe the scene and be reminded that there is more that binds us than divides us."

Bring an art project to your neighbourhood!

Last year, a group of neighbours and local artist Agnes Niewiadomski collaborated on the 'Gathering Space', a public art piece at Brighton Park. The piece weaved together locally foraged materials to create a beautiful decorative wall.

Want to do something similar? Apply to our Artists in Neighbourhoods grant and get up to $5,000 towards your project!

Neighbourhood kindness

Snow shovelling with text that reads neighbourhood kindness

With all the snow this year, we've received so many nominations of kind neighbours helping with snow removal! Here is another one a neighbour wrote in...

"Through all this snow this winter, Darryl has truly earned a spot in the 'Snow Clearing Hall of Fame.' He's gone above and beyond, clearing the driveway for multiple neighbors—multiple times a day! If there were a gold medal for snow removal, he’d be wearing it around his neck, probably while clearing more snow."

Have a great neighbour like Darryl that you want to thank? Nominate them for our Neighbourhood Kindness program and we'll send them a thank-you package and enter them to win a $20 Uptown BIA gift card.

New park in Vista Hills

City Council has approved funding for a new design concept at Wood Lily Park. The park will feature a trailhead and lookout, covered seating and gathering space, tree planting, fitness equipment and a tennis court.

We're excited about this new space for neighbours to connect! Construction of this project will begin later this year and more details will be shared in the coming months.
