Saché Martin: Engineer and Distribution Systems Operator |
|
Saché Martin is the first female distribution systems operator at BGE, an Exelon operating company in Baltimore. Saché was featured in a BGEnow profile highlighting her career and education. As a distribution systems operator, Saché works hand-in-hand with the field crews to make sure they are safe and have adequate information when they are working on power lines and infrastructure. ⚡ Saché 's advice for young women wanting to join engineering is "Too often we talk ourselves out of opportunities. I would encourage women to strengthen their strengths and work on their weaknesses.” Then go for it, Saché said. Chances are, “you will be pleasantly surprised.”👏

Akiko Iwasaki: Prominent Asian American Researcher in STEM at Yale
|
Akiko Iwasaki is a professor of immunology at Yale who gained widespread attention as a trusted public health expert at the beginning of the pandemic. 🔬 Akiko took to Twitter to dispel myths about COVID-19 after observing miscommunication from public health officials early in the pandemic. She made videos like this one to spread facts about immunology to her followers and the media! May 7th is Space Day! 🌌🚀 Space Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of May. An unofficial educational holiday created in 1997 by Lockheed Martin, Space Day aims to promote the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields among young people. |

The Museum of Science and Industry is hosting a webinar on May 11th where students can meet NASA innovators with visionary ideas powering new missions to the most extreme environments in and out of our solar system! 🛰️ Join scientists from NASA for the event From Science Fiction to Science Fact. Projects featured include the Lunar Crater Radio Telescope (pictured to the right), an exciting concept for the largest filled-aperture radio telescope in the Solar System, and the Venus Landsailing Rover, a wind-powered exploration device for the harsh environment of the planet Venus. As Fellows in the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, the scientists behind these projects are creating innovative, technically credible, advanced concepts that could one day "change the possible" in aerospace.

Women have been a large part of the history of nuclear energy. ⚛️ From Leona Woods Marshall, the only woman on the team that built the world’s first nuclear reactor in Chicago in 1942, to Maria Goeppert Mayer, who was the second of only three women to win the Nobel Prize in physics and who worked alongside Leona at the Argonne National Laboratory, these women have given us the largest and most reliable source of carbon-free energy in Illinois and across the country.
