Saving the Heart of the Fraser
The stretch of the Fraser River between Mission and Hope, with its stony shores, gravel reach and winding side channels is so ecologically and biologically diverse it has been called “The Heart of the Fraser”. This area provides important habitat for migrating birds and fish, including salmon and sturgeon.

The Nature Trust of BC has prioritized The Heart of the Fraser for many years. We are developing a complex of conservation lands at Nicomen Slough, a remnant side channel of the Fraser River. The first property, Nicomen Slough Parcel B, was donated in 2019. We are now working on purchasing the adjoining parcel, Nicomen Slough Parcel A.
The first $200,000 in donations to Nicomen Slough will be matched by MapleCross. Now is a perfect time to double the impact of your gift!
Introducing The Nature Trust Timeline
Conversations on Conservation with Ron Anderson
Ron Anderson, Past Chair of The Nature Trust of British Columbia, has deep roots in the province and a wealth of knowledge from his involvement with non-profit organizations for over 40 years.

Ron led The Nature Trust through the development of several major initiatives, including our current strategic plan.

Ron’s Conversation on Conservation took us behind the scenes of The Nature Trust’s board, its vision for the future and the organization’s achievements.
Banding Burrowing Owls
The tiny Burrowing Owl is one of the most endangered birds found in Canada’s grasslands.

They have become endangered because they live in a very specific habitat: the dry valley bottoms of the Southern Interior, which comprise less than 1% of the area of the province and which we are losing at an alarming rate.

Our Okanagan Conservation Field Crew has teamed up with the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society to help try to restore the burrowing owl population through habitat restoration and banding for research.
