Thank you for your interest in Scouting. In the next week, you will have two opportunities to learn more about and sign up for Scouting.

You can come any time between 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. and should plan on taking about thirty minutes to sign up. Families will be assigned to a Cub Scout Pack by School. If the date of that pack meeting does not work, we will find a meeting night that does. In Medford, there are Cub Scout Packs that meet on Monday through Thursday night.

How Cub Scouting Works

The Fun of Cub Scouts

The Impact of Scouting

Cub Scouts complete adventures appropriate to their age and grade group by den.

Dens are led by parent volunteers, with all parents taking turns leading an adventure they have experience with. Dens will meet two to three times a month for about an hour, with most den meetings starting at 6:00 or 6:30 P.M.

Learn More About Adventures

All the Dens make up the Cub Scout Pack.

Once a month, the Cub Scout Pack has a pack meeting where Scouts are recognized, show off what they learn, and have fun together. The pack is led by the Cubmaster, who is supported by the Pack Committee.

A Cub Scout Pack will meet once a month on a weeknight for about one hour starting at 6:00 or 6:30 P.M.

Weekend Adventures Year-Round

Packs will often have Saturday or weekend adventures once a month. Scouts race pinewood derby cars, provide community service, explore nature and their community, and get the chance to make new friends. In the Crater Lake Council, our Cub Scouts have the opportunity to have fun in the winter at Snow Capades and in the summer at Camp McLoughlin Cub Scout Resident Camp.

What do Cub Scouts Cost?

To register your Scout and purchase uniforms and books, the total cost will be around $250. This will cover registration through December of 2023. The Crater Lake Council also has scholarships available for families that need assistance with registering their child and obtaining a Scouting uniform.

Field trips, adventure costs, camping, and supply costs will be additional. Every pack will raise money to cover these costs, with the goal being that the fundraisers cover most additional costs and Scouts learn to pay their way.

Volunteering in Scouting

Cub Scouts is run by volunteers. Volunteer opportunities will vary from helping with committees or Scouting events, teaching a skill to your child’s den, helping behind the scenes at fundraisers and events, serving as a Den Leader or Cubmaster, or serving on the committee as a treasurer, social media chair, fundraising chair, or other opportunities. The parents will meet monthly for a parent-planning meeting to support each other.

Leaders in Scouting complete an application process that includes a background check, reference check, and the completion of Youth Protection Training.

Safety in Scouting

Scouting safety and child abuse prevention are top priorities in Scouting. All parents are encouraged, and all leaders must complete youth protection training every two years. Scouting also provides lessons and resources for parents to talk to their children about abuse.
