Glendale Chamber Public Policy Council Announces Candidate Endorsements
"The Glendale Chamber of Commerce is endorsing three candidates for the upcoming City Council Election.

The Glendale Chamber of Commerce's Public Policy Council conducted a thorough review of candidates to include a written questionnaire and personal interview before sending the official recommendations to the Board of Directors for approval. Candidates were selected who have distinguished themselves as knowledgeable and supportive of issues positively affecting the business community in the City of Glendale.

The Glendale Chamber has issued the following endorsements:
Cholla District: Re-election of Vice-Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff
Barrel District: Re-election of Councilmember Bart Turner
Ocotillo District: Re-election of Councilmember Jamie Aldama"

How mended relationship between Cardinals and Glendale helped return Super Bowl to Arizona

City News
Mayor Weiers Elected Vice Chair of Regional Transportation Committee
"The Regional Council of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has unanimously elected Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers as the vice chair of the Transportation Policy Committee (TPC). Mayor Jenn Daniels of Gilbert has been selected as the committee chair. 

The TPC was established by state law in 2002 to oversee the development of the 20-year regional transportation plan and to guide transportation planning in the region. The TPC has 22 members representing local elected officials from across the county, including; the business community, the Arizona Department of Transportation, Maricopa County, and the Native American Indian Communities. The committee provides a unique opportunity for business representatives to have a direct say in developing transportation policy for the region. The TPC is charged with developing regional transportation policy positions and providing oversight for the implementation of Proposition 400."

Portion of Bethany Home Renamed to Cardinals Way
"The Glendale City Council has officially renamed Bethany Home Road to Cardinals Way between 91st to 99th Avenues. The renaming is in recognition of the significant economic and community impact the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals football team has had on Glendale, the West Valley and the entire state of Arizona."

Economic Development Team Working with the Community to Get the Word Out About Glendale
"Part of our role in Economic Development is to ensure that our audience of citizens, brokers, site selectors, and partners are informed of the community assets and development activity in Glendale. The Glendale Economic Development team had the opportunity to spread the word in numerous venues this past quarter such as the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Business over Breakfast, the Kiwanis Club, the Glendale Rotary, and the Glendale Public Library DIY and Tech Fest. These opportunities are critical to keeping the community up to date."
Glendale Transportation Update
Traffic Interchange Reconstruction Project
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have initiated a project to reconstruct the traffic interchanges on Interstate 17 at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads. The purpose of the project is to improve regional traffic flow as the population grows and development continues in north Phoenix. Design began in 2017 and scheduled for completion in summer 2018. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2018 and last approximately 20 months. Construction at both interchange locations is anticipated to occur within existing ADOT right-of-way.

Head to Downtown Glendale on Saturday, July 14th for the 12th Annual Christmas in July shopping event. You'll find holiday treats, spectacular shopping, pictures with Santa Claus, holiday meals and deals, and a school supply drive to benefit OCJ Kids.

Military & Veterans Affairs Committee:
Flag Project Approved by City Council
The Glendale Chamber Military & Veteran Affairs Committee (MVAC) recently received permission from Glendale’s city council to install a 20ft flagpole high atop Thunderbird Park. The flag will be placed at Arrowhead Point, which is the most photographed view and highest point in Glendale. The MVAC has been working on this project approximately 2 years and has agreed to sign a contract with the city vowing to maintain and care for our nation's symbol of freedom.

Upon completion of the flagpole installation, MVAC members will be soliciting community residents, active duty military and veterans, students, boy & girl scouts, and multiple military organizations to assist with putting the first official flag high up over the city. A tentative date of November 11th, Veterans day, has been established as the target completion date for the project.

Meet the New President of Glendale Community College and Our Newest Board Member!
Dr. Teresa Leyba Ruiz
Dr. Teresa Leyba Ruiz has served students, faculty, and staff, as an educator for 28 years. She currently serves as the President at Glendale Community College having previously served as the Vice President of Student Affairs, Associate Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs, and Interim Dean of Instruction at GCC.  Prior to coming to GCC, Dr. Ruiz was a member of the mathematics faculty at South Mountain Community College, serving as the Division Chair for Mathematics, Science & Engineering, and holding various leadership positions at SMCC. She began her career teaching mathematics to junior high and high school students in South Phoenix and enjoys being a mentor to students. In addition, Dr. Ruiz serves on many community organizations. She is a strong advocate for student success and believes in the power of education and that all students can learn and achieve great things with the right support and hard work.

We are thrilled that she has agreed to serve on the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and to have her as a part of our community in Glendale!

Grand Canyon University Returns to Non-Profit Status
"Under the terms of a transaction that closed on July 1, 2018, Grand Canyon Education sold Grand Canyon University to a nonprofit entity that will retain the GCU name. The transaction returns GCU to its historical roots as a nonprofit university and ensures the long-term legacy of both GCU and GCE.

“We are incredibly proud of the journey that has helped us get to where we are today,” said University President and GCE Chief Executive Officer Brian Mueller. “We have taken a university that was on the brink of bankruptcy and created a higher education structure that has greatly benefitted thousands of students and families, the inner-city community in which we reside and U.S. businesses that covet the graduates we produce. That is a testament to the free market system and an American success story that should be celebrated."

Come to Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix every Friday night in July for an exclusive viewing of some great movie titles. Dive 'n' Movies are included with park admission, and are projected onto a big screen near the wave pool. Movies start at 8pm. Limited rides and attractions open after start of movie.

Southwest Gas: Construction Alert
New Coyotes President and CEO Announced
The Coyotes have promoted Ahron Cohen to president and CEO, Cohen confirmed on Tuesday to ArizonaSports.com. Cohen will replace Steve Patterson, who was named to the same posts on July 12, 2017. Patterson will continue to work with the Coyotes in a consulting/advisory role.

“Ahron is a rising star in the National Hockey League and a leader in the Phoenix community. I couldn’t be happier to name him as our CEO,” Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway said in a statement produced by the team. “Ahron is a tireless worker and he brings real vision to the job. With John Chayka running our hockey operations and Ahron leading the business, the Coyotes continue to be in great hands. I wouldn’t trade our future with any team in the NHL.”

ADOT Requests Public Input for State Rail Plan Update
As part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s focus on multimodal long-range planning, the department is updating its State Rail Plan to better determine rail improvements across the state, based on future needs and opportunities.   ADOT is looking to the public and stakeholders to provide their input about what the State Rail Plan should include for both freight and passenger rail systems. A survey in both English and Spanish is available at azdot.gov/staterailplan . Comments are requested by Aug. 10, 2018.
