Region 2, District 2: Traffic from westbound U.S. 20 to southbound Interstate 39 was relocated to a new ramp on Aug. 14. The new ramp, which features a flyover bridge that straddles across U.S. 20, is part of the $98.8 million project to rebuild the I-39/U.S. 20 interchange in Rockford.

The new ramp will have one lane open initially, with the second lane opening in the coming weeks. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

The I-39 and U.S. 20 interchange project are part of a larger $247.6 million, multiyear project to improve I-39 between the Harrison Avenue interchange and Blackhawk Road. All projects are anticipated to conclude by the end of 2027. More information about the I-39 reconstruction project is available on the project webpage.

Region 5, District 9: Work is underway to replace the two I-64 bridges crossing the Wabash River on the Illinois-Indiana state line. The $136 million improvement project will take place over six consecutive construction seasons, broken down into the following stages:

Stage 1: During construction, motorists can expect lane closures on I-64 in White County. At least one lane will always remain open in both directions. Work will include pavement repairs and construction of crossovers for a future traffic shift. Construction is anticipated to be completed in early winter 2024.

Stage 2: Once the crossovers are complete, traffic will share the eastbound I-64 lanes. Work will consist of demolition of the westbound I-64 bridge and construction of the new eastbound and westbound bridges. Work is anticipated to begin in winter 2024 and construction of the new structures is anticipated to be completed in fall 2028.

Stage 3: The remaining work will include removal of the existing eastbound structure. Motorists can expect lane closures and lane shifts. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2028 and be completed in fall 2029.
