This month we’re shining the spotlight on Kampgrounds of America (KOA) in our monthly tour sponsor spotlight.

KOA is the world’s largest system of open-to-the-public campgrounds, with more than 520 KOA properties. There are KOA locations in nearly every U.S. state and in nine Canadian provinces.

KOA has two mobile audio tours on the TravelStorys platforms — one in the Smoky Mountains and the other in Moab, Utah. Here’s what they have to say about their tour experiences:

Q: What is your favorite story on each tour and why?

A: On our Smoky Mountains tour, listeners can learn a little bit more about the rich history of the Cherokee and other Native tribes. The stories of the tribes are woven throughout the area’s history, as guests can discover how their culture influenced the development of the region and the national park. It’s important to honor their stories.

For our Moab tour, there are so many to choose from it’s hard to pick a favorite. I think most visitors to the area will want to jump to the bigger, more well-known hot spots, like Arches National Park. This TravelStorys tour offers a deeper appreciation and insight into the lesser-known areas — like Dead Horse State Park — and illustrates how they were significant to the people and American history.

Q: Is there anything that surprises visitors about your tours?

A: I think many visitors are surprised to learn about the ecology of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park has incredibly diverse wildlife and flora. Visitors are surprised to learn how many different types of nature experiences you can have in the park. Things like the wildlife and wildflower viewing opportunities not only change throughout the seasons, but even by the time of day you visit.

I think visitors are surprised to learn that there is so much in the Moab area to see and explore. It’s not just national parks and hiking. There is something for just about everyone, including mountain biking, ATV exploring, and white-water rafting.

Q: Where do the majority of your visitors come from?

A: The Smoky Mountains attract people from around the world. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the United States, and for good reason. If you haven’t explored the Smoky Mountains for yourself, you need to add a trip to your bucket list!

Most of our Moab visitors come from the Colorado and Utah area. However, with the Moab area being home to two of Utah's mighty five national parks, it’s a destination for vacationers from all over the country.

Q: Please briefly describe your target audience for these tours.

A: We promote these tours among our campers as a way to connect with the natural world around our campgrounds. No matter what the age, background, or interest, there's a little something for everyone. The tours also offer more in-depth background on the sites located in the area.

Q: Why did you want to tell the stories on your tours?

A: The story of the Smoky Mountains is one that runs deeper than the thrill attractions and scenic vistas. For a visitor to truly experience the region, they will really want to learn more about its history and the people who live here. The Smoky Mountains are a one-of-a-kind place with a lot of stories to share.

The stories on the Moab tour offer a variety of experiences and information regarding the area. Not only will guests learn helpful tips like park fees and hours of attractions, but they will also learn the history of the indigenous people, their lands, and so much more.

Q: How does telling your stories through the TravelStorys audio tour platforms compare to other ways you've communicated with your audience in the past?

A: We like that TravelStorys audio tours allow us to be with our campers in their RVs or vehicles as they travel through the region. While our friendly staff is happy to talk with visitors on our campgrounds and share recommendations on our favorite hikes and spots to visit, there are just too many experiences to mention! The TravelStorys app allows us to continue that connection with our campers while they explore off the campgrounds.
