In This Issue - November 2017 Newsletter

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT / CEO
November 2017
Beth L. Mitchell, President & CEO

Here are some of the comments received on the "Active Shooter/Violence in the Workplace" class that was held in October:

"Super informative and eye opening" "Excellent workshop, everyone should take it" "All officers had very helpful information and instruction" "Excellent training, vital information presented, very grateful for local law enforcement" "Great class with short concise instruction that's easy to remember and put into action.  I highly recommend that every business take this class and be prepared!"

Based upon the high level of interest, we have scheduled another class on November 9 th, from 10 - noon here in the Chamber conference room.  The COPE Unit of the Sebastian Police Department will again teach the class.  Please make sure you RSVP, there is limited space and this class is free to Chamber members.

The Chamber's Legislative/Government Affairs Committee will be hosting a Candidate's Forum for the City of Sebastian Council elections.  There are three seats up, with four candidates.  The Committee has developed a set of questions for the candidates, and they will also be able to present their ideas, desires, and goals for our fair City at the forum.  It is scheduled for October 26, from 7 to 9pm at City Hall.  It will also be televised and uploaded to the City website and at www.SebastianChamber.com.  It's good to know who the candidates are, and it's even better if you exercise your right to vote!

The Media Auction held at SpringHill Suites Marriott and sponsored by Bay Street Pharmacy, Vintage to Vogue and the Hometown News was very successful.  Our surprise auctioneer, IRC Commissioner Peter O'Bryan, debuted his auctioneer skills and the Media partners did a great job explaining their products to the attendees.  White Glove Moving and Storage helped warm up the crowd with their drink sponsorship and Marsh Landing fed us well!  Many thanks to everybody that contributed to the success!

We promise an active holiday season!  The information about Light Up Night has gone out, we are seeking Volunteers to honor for our December luncheon!  We have a packed agenda for the November luncheon, with speakers from Indian River State College, and our Awards ceremony.  This is a lunch you will not want to miss as we recognize fellow Chamber members for their contributions to the business community.  Again, reservations are a good idea!

The Chamber Tourism staff put us on the map again!  Further in the newsletter you will read about the conference held by Visit Florida here in Sebastian.  It was a three day training session for tourism folks who run Visitor Centers throughout the state of Florida. The conference, held at Captain Hiram's, provided training and an exchange of ideas, and great networking opportunities.  The attendees loved the Sebastian River Area, and enjoyed their visit to the Pelican Porch Visitor Center.  And staff came back a little smarter, with new ideas and new friends!  Great job by the entire team! Keep your eyes open for our new sign, designed and created by Curt Oxford, and provided by the City of Sebastian.  It will be a marquee sign, providing us with the ability to message, promote events in the community, and provide information on Chamber activities.

Everyone is eagerly waiting the cool front coming in next week, and pumpkins are everywhere!  The hardest decision you will have to make before October 31, is what will you be for Halloween?  The holidays are finally upon us and I am sure you all are ready to celebrate!

Have a prosperous month!

Annual Light Up Night.

Get noticed!
Light Up Night has become a favorite among many and is the perfect opportunity to introduce your business to the public, let them learn how to find you, what you have to offer, and is a special way to show customer appreciation. This event marks the beginning of Sebastian's holiday happenings with the Christmas Parade scheduled the next day; and it's a great reason to get out all those holiday trappings and show off your decorating talents!

Get on the map!
A map of participating businesses along with a description of their special offerings will be published in the Press Journal on the day of the event. Maps will also be available for pick up in the Chamber office. Make sure to register for Light Up Night no later than Wednesday, November 22nd  so that you will be included on the map!

Get in the holiday spirit!
We look forward to sharing the holiday spirit with you and carrying on the Light Up Night tradition of encouraging the community to support our local businesses. Please join us the evening of December 1st for a night of magical lights and bustling crowds in the Sebastian River Area.

We have been tracking both campaigns and we have received a large number of leads so far! We also just placed a half page and ¼ page ad in Food Traveler Magazine which will be featured in the "Escaping Winters Chill" section of the publication. Our ads highlight the unique food festivals in our area as well as the diverse activities to enjoy!
  • We received a $5,000 Small Business Grant from VISIT FLORIDA for 2017-2018. We will be matching these funds to create a new Destination Video promoting the Sebastian River Area. Stay tuned for more details!

Certified Travel Information Center Summit
In October, we partnered with Capt Hiram's Resort to host and sponsor the 2nd Annual VISIT FLORIDA Certified Travel Information Center Summit. A big thank you to Capt Hiram's for helping us put together a great proposal that brought the event to our area, for co-sponsoring this event with us and for the wonderful hospitality during the event! This was a wonderful opportunity to bring 25 people in the tourism industry from all around the state to the Sebastian River Area. Britney & I had a busy 3-days learning what other Visitor's Centers are doing, opportunities with VISIT FLORIDA, networking, hearing from our neighbors at Georgia Tourism and much more! We had the opportunity to do a site visit at our Pelican Porch Visitor's Center so they could see our operation first hand! A big thank you to our Tourism Chairs, Capt Christy Lenz & Dawn Biehl for attending and representing the Chamber and to Crab E's Eatery for providing some delicious fresh seafood appetizers. The weather was pretty rainy and windy over the 3-days but we didn't let it rain our our parade or keep us from going on a nice river cruise up the St. Sebastian River. VISIT FLORIDA staff no longer participates in Education Tours (which we have previously hosted) so this was a great way to bring the staff from the I-95, I-75, I-10, I-231, and the Tallahassee Capitol Welcome Centers to experience our area. They are the people interacting with visitor's first hand when they get to our state, giving them recommendations, helping them make their last minute plans and routes so we are happy to be fresh in their minds! It was a great conference and everyone loved our destination and many are looking forward to making plans to come back on vacation!

______________________________

Day Trippin' with Patti & Vicky is a small travel business that caters to individuals and groups looking for a little adventure!

Day Trippin' was conceived in 2013 by two semi-retired women, Vicky Stein and Patti Gibbons, who had both previously worked in the field of travel.  Vicky was a retired travel agent who had vast experience with domestic and international travel; Patti was retired from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute where she had organized primarily day trips and some overnight trips for Harbor Branch members.

Since they began their day trippin' business 4 years ago, Patti and Vicky have escorted trips to places as far south as Everglades National Park to places as far north as St. Simons Island in Georgia with many stops in between including Sarasota, Orlando, Winter Park, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Ft. Myers, Palm Beach, Cocoa Village, Merritt Island, Micanopy, Okeechobee, Hollywood, etc.

They have also organized trips to local attractions such as the National SEAL Museum, Triton Subs, Piper Aircraft, the Zora Neale Hurston Heritage Trail, Sunrise Theater, the Lyric Theater and the McLarty Treasure Museum.

Coming up in December will be two trips with holiday themes.  Saturday, Dec. 2, Day Trippin' with Patti & Vicky will return to one of its favorite destinations - Bok Tower in Lake Wales - for a Sunset and Symphony concert on the Green.  The day will begin with a tour of Pinewood Estate and a self-guided walking tour around the grounds at Bok Tower which will include the Visitors Center and exhibit hall, the Gift Shop and Blue Palmetto Café.  The group will wrap up its "Christmas at Bok Tower" experience with a Sunset Concert located on the grounds around Bok Tower listening to music provided by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Singing Tower Carillon.

Friday, Dec. 8, day trippers will explore Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas, FL followed with a "lunch and stroll" in charming quaint Coca Village.

Day Trippin' with Patti & Vicky lead trips - depending on group's size either aboard large travel buses or in mid-size vans.

For more information on upcoming trips with Day Trippin' with Patti & Vicky, call (772) 569-8372.

COMMUNICATION CORNER
By Britney Melchiori - Communications & Marketing Director
Chamber Advertising Opportunities - it's not one size fits all!

Every company wants to stand out and make an impression that is better than others in their industry, specialty area or region. Advertising is one of the oldest forms of public announcement and is meant not only to inform, but also to influence and persuade the viewer to take a specific action. This is where the Chamber plays a large role. We know that what may work for one business, may not for another. With our diverse membership, you have a unique opportunity to reach a broad audience segment through our various advertising opportunities.

Have a Banner Day
Web banner display ads are currently available on SebastianChamber.com!  Not only does a web banner on our site reinforce your brand to the thousands of visitors a day coming to our site, it helps to keep you top of mind! See the success of your investment with trackable data - every impression (view) and every click to your site is registered - and that report is available to you at anytime!  Web banners offer dynamic messaging, too! Your ad can be changed with the season, a special event you're having, a certain product you're promoting, etc!  Banner ads range from $325/year up to $1,000/year.

Featured and Fantastic
Your chamber membership comes with a basic listing on our site that includes your contact information... BUT your business and the outstanding service you offer isn't basic, so why should your listing be?  A featured listing in our online business directory is like having your very own webpage within our site. Show off your logo, add videos and pictures, include links and important content. The more information you can provide, the better! Featured listings are trackable, too! See how many unique hits and click-throughs to your website at anytime. Featured listings are less than $15/month!

Partial to Print
Our two-time award winning annual Business Directory and our amazing Visitors Guide brochure are  great options for businesses looking for print advertising. Both publications have been the  official trusted source for community information and vacation planning for more than 17 years! The directory is printed in December each year, and the visitors guide is printed every summer. And bonus - digital versions of each publication are provided online! Ad prices accommodate every budget!

Contact us today to discuss your advertising plan and start reaping the benefits of chamber advertising! 772-589-5969
