OV no longer
requires hard-
copy plans for
construction
To reach “peak performance,” the Town of Oro Valley has improved its process for reviewing development plans.
Town Manager Mary Jacobs said that, in the past, customers were required to deliver 7 copies of their construction plans to Town Hall each time a building permit or development project was being reviewed.
The implemented solution is a new digital platform for electronic review, which eliminates paper submittals, resulting in an estimated cost savings of $151,601 to the customer in the form of printing, time and transportation.
When it’s pouring,
pull over, stay out
of washes; be safe
when you’re hiking
Be wary of flooding this monsoon, the Pima County Regional Flood Control District is advising.
The threat is most acute in low-lying areas, and those in watersheds most affected by last year’s Bighorn Fire.
It warns:
Motorists to pull over and wait for the rain to subside if possible. Never drive into a flowing a wash and never ignore barricades or road closed signage. For the latest road conditions and closures, the public should call the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Road Conditions Hotline at 520-547-7510.
Hikers to be safe. Hike in the mornings, don’t hike during extreme heat, avoid narrow canyons or dry ravines, and don’t hike alone.
Tohono Chul’s
Monsoon Madness
plant sale 7/30, 8/1
Newly renewed Chamber member Tohono Chul brings its annual Monsoon Madness back to Tucson on Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31.
This “wet and wonderful monsoon season” brings more than rain. Tohono Chul hosts local growers and nationally-renowned plant experts with their specially-selected inventory at this Tucson tradition.
“The annual sale is for more than just plant nerds, anyone can come on down to buy the weird and wondrous and learn plant care from the professionals,” an invitation said. “With a variety of shrubs, succulents, and cacti from the bizarre and edible to the showy and tricky, you are bound to bring home a peculiar plant.”
Vendors will be on hand from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 30, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31. Admission to the gardens is free during the event, so you can view all the other native species in the Tohono Chul collection.
Cornelison earns
recognition from
OV town manager
Chris Cornelison, Oro Valley’s assistant town manager, has received the “Manager’s Manager Award” from Town Manager Mary Jacobs.
“Chris continues to be my right hand, and his leadership and dedication were especially visible this year with projects such as OVSafeSteps, COVID-19 policies and changes, successful Police MOU (memorandum of understanding) negotiations, and many others,” Jacobs told the town council in her executive report.
“During a tumultuous year, Chris helped keep the organization focused and was, and continues to be, an invaluable member of TeamOV. I hope you’ll take a moment to congratulate Chris on this well-deserved recognition,” she concluded.

Innovation Park
diorama can be
yours for asking
A diorama of Innovation Park in Oro Valley is about to be orphaned.
Would you like it?
The 5-by-7-foot diorama was created by Venture West, lead developer of Innovation Park and the Innovation Corporate Center. The diorama was created “back in the day,” and has outlived its use, Venture West said.
“We would love to donate it to someone in the Oro Valley community that would find it useful and / or enjoyable,” said Karen Kobylinski, commercial property manager at Venture West.
You can reach Karen at 520-392-8834, or email.

Please, roll up
your sleeve and

Ribbon welcomes new
owner to Centre Stage
|
When she was growing up, dance “changed my life,” Tylene Nichols said Tuesday. “It gave me that boost I needed.”
As the new owner of Centre Stage Dance Studio, Lambert and La Canada in Oro Valley, Tylene is giving that same boost to dancers as young as 3. She loves “being able to see that same light in the girls who dance.”
“It always feels like we’re participating in a dream, in a sense,” Mayor Joe Winfield said Tuesday, when your Chamber and town officials cut the ribbon at Centre Stage and welcomed Tylene to the business community. “Thanks for inviting us to be part of your dream.”
Tylene bought the business in June from Katrina Wyckoff, who continues to operate Centre Stage Pole Fitness around the corner.
“Being a business owner is not something I ever considered before,” Tylene said. “It’s been an amazing opportunity to meet so many more people.”
Centre Stage Dance Studio offers dance instruction, classes and competitive team opportunities for everyone from age 3 and beyond. “Thank you for providing these services to our community,” the mayor said.
Joining the mayor were Oro Valley Town Council members Dr. Harry “Mo” Greene II and Tim Bohen, along with Chief of Police Kara Riley and economic development specialist Margie Adler. Your Chamber gave away $50 gift cards to Century Theatres / Oro Valley Marketplace, Goyita’s, DJ Nails and My Gym Children’s Fitness Center. Trico, others building
solar array, storage at
site west of Catalina
|
Chamber member Trico Electric Cooperative is partnering with 2 other entities, Torch Clean Energy and CoBank, to construct a 10-megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility along with a 15-megawatt battery storage system on Edwin Road west of North Oracle Road near Catalina.
The solar and battery storage project is called the Chirreon Facility, on a 90-acre parcel owned by the Arizona State Land Department. Construction is slated to begin this fall, with completion in mid-2022.
Chirreon will have more than 40,000 photovoltaic solar panels, and the 15-megawatt battery storage system will be capable of discharging 30 MWh of energy. The solar panels have single-axis tracking devices that automatically track the sun throughout the day to maximize power generation. The battery storage will help Trico delay the cost of transmission and distribution upgrades and manage area load in a more efficient and cost-effective manner, a release said.
Once operational, the Chirreon facility will produce more than 30,000 megawatt-hours of energy each year, or enough to power about 3,000 average residential homes in the Trico service territory.
“As a community-owned cooperative, Trico’s mission is to provide its members safe, reliable energy in an environmentally responsible and cost-effective manner. The battery storage system at Chirreon will be one of the first for a cooperative in Arizona, and it exemplifies Trico’s commitment to achieving its mission and serving its members in innovative ways.” said Brian Heithoff, CEO and general manager of Trico.
