Summer Slump to Back-to-School Funk

Help Your Child Healthfully Rise and Shine This School Year

While some youth skip back to school eager to make 10 friends and run for student council, others return to class in an emotional slump of self-doubt and loneliness amidst roller coaster emotions of adolescence. They may make straight As, excel in soccer and have friends yet still feel inadequate. Parents can lovingly guide struggling children to discuss concerns, embrace their uniqueness and tackle challenges with a growth mindset as they pursue interests and build a supportive network.

Connect Reading with Real World with Lola Plants a Garden

Reading helps children build their imagination, but it also connects them to the outside world. When children are introduced to new topics and concepts like planting

a garden by reading about it or looking at pictures in a book and then see and experience in the real world it helps them build their knowledge and curiosity of the environment around them.

The Book Club’s October title for Four-Year Olds, Lola Plants a Garden, introduces children to the world of plants and gardening. With the help of the reading guide, parents can use the book to spark their child’s interest in the outside world. The guide encourages parents to

talk with their kids about the topic before reading the book, and then connecting it to their own life. There

is also a simple activity that will help children see how planting works that will keep them engaged for weeks.

Parents can also take a nature walk with their child and point out plants, flowers and trees, and talk about how the environment nurtures the plants and what they need to thrive.

Sports are a great way for children to stay healthy and active! It’s also a way to make friends, develop a strong sense of self-esteem, and work on teamwork skills.
