BONUS PRESENTATION FOR CONFERENCE REGISTRANTS
GETTING BEDTIME RIGHT
BY GORDON NEUFELD, PH.D.
One of my faculty members approached me recently to see if I was willing to help her create a presentation on bedtime issues – a challenge I readily and enthusiastically accepted. As I got into gathering the material, I realized that the topic actually encapsulated the essential issues involved in emotional health and well-being – the topic of our upcoming online conference. Bedtime is, after all is said and done, basically about dealing with the most central issue underlying what troubles us as humans – facing separation that can seem unbearable to us. What bedtime is for children, our own mortality can be for us as adults – inevitable, inescapable and often intolerable as well. No wonder it has been called 'the little death'.
Getting bedtime right is a big deal if one still has young children. It sets the stage for both parents and children for dealing with the myriad of separations a child faces in life. Of course, as we all know, sleep and bedtime problems can plague us at any age. Addressing them is much easier when there is an understanding of the issues involved. Amazingly, the lessons of bedtime can help guide us in how to face separation throughout life, even at the end.
We should have commissioned bedtime issues as one of the topics for our conference on April 16-18th, but we didn't. We do have over 30 other topics covered however, all very salient. So, given that I have prepared this presentation and there isn't room for it in the conference, we decided to share it with our conference registrants as a bonus presentation. The link to the pre-recorded address, Getting Bedtime Right, will be sent on Wednesday, April 14th to all who have registered for the conference by that time. See below for full conference details.
A closing (or perhaps opening) thought … In the beginning, there is bedtime. In the end, there is deathtime. In the middle, there are all the other separations we face along the way. There could be no greater investment in the emotional health and well-being of our loved ones than to get this right, right from the beginning, if possible.

We are excited about rolling out a brand new edition of our Making Sense of Discipline course. Since the filming of the existing course, a number of insights have emerged in neuroscience, especially regarding the role of play as well as a more precise understanding of feelings. We believe these added insights will be helpful to parents and teachers, and in addition, make their job of managing behaviour that much more natural, intuitive and even easier.
