Milton Historical Society Presents:

Getting Started with Genealogy and

Family History Research

Speaker: Carl Jackson, Society Program and Facebook Chair

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at 6:30 p.m.

Milton Branch Library

855 Mayfield Road

Milton, Georgia 30009

Carl will share his experiences in family history research as a very knowledgeable (and dogged) amateur.

His program includes researching your family history, covering: how to collect information from family members, how to organize your research, where to search online, which software is appropriate, and other great tips!

This comprehensive overview will also point us to any resources available at the Milton library.

Bonus offer: Carl is generously offering help to anyone who has questions as they get started. For instance, he is willing to meet with neophytes in one-on-one sessions in library conference rooms. In Carl’s words, “I am not a professional, but have an extensive background based on 30 plus years as an amateur.” Good enough - thanks, Carl!

Why we curate old papers before tossing: One Society Board member was able to travel to the Netherlands and meet distant cousins based on one saved piece of paper - a 1932 death notice sent to a grandfather in the U.S. The journey led to family history records dating back to the 1720s, discovered in archives in Alkmaar, North Holland. Dating back to the 10th century, the town is an important dairy and cheese center.
