Why a Tent Revival?

What is a Tent Revival in the Holy Spirit?

Our Tent Revival ( Life in the Spirit Seminar ) is an invitation to make or renew a deep personal commitment to Jesus Christ in openness to the Holy Spirit and His gifts. It is usually a weekend event, with preaching, worship, music and sacramental ministry that takes place in a larger tent, outside of the church building .

Why have this in a tent and not in the church building?

Because we want the faith to be more visible, more accessible, outside "in the streets" especially for those in our neighborhood who otherwise might not come in if it were hidden inside of the church building.

" I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty, because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and of clinging to its own security." (Pope Francis)

Who is the Tent Revival for?

It is for people of all walks of life or religious affiliation. It is for those who are troubled and burdened by life’s challenges. It is for those who are far away from the Lord and those who are practicing their faith but need it revitalized. Invite all your family and friends, especially those who have fallen away from the faith!

What is the purpose of this Tent Revival in the Holy Spirit? Through anointed preaching and vibrant praise & worship, and encouraging fellowship, we seek to help as many people as possible to encounter our Lord Jesus Christ and to open their hearts to a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Just before his ascension to the Father, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit upon his disciples to guide and empower them to live the Christian life and to give testimony to others about what He has done for them.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth". (Acts 1:4)

Why do we need to receive the Holy Spirit to give witness to Jesus?

The Holy Spirit renews us, teaches us and transforms us, filling our hearts with such a love for Jesus that we long to share this love with as many people as possible.

We are so transformed by His grace that we cannot be silent.

When our hearts are renewed by God’s grace,

we long to bless and serve those who are in need.

This is the mission of our parish.

This is the mission of our Tent Revival!

What are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit that come with the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The illustrations below highlight the different gifts of the Holy Spirit.

First, the foundation of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit- the Sanctifying Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2-3). These gifts are needed for our personal salvation.

In preparation for Pentecost, we will be praying with the universal Church the 9 Day Pentecost Novena for the Sanctifying Gifts of the Holy Spirit, starting on Friday, May 30 until June 7 (Novena here.)

Besides the Sanctifying gifts of the Holy Spirit, there are other gifts of the Holy Spirit that are mentioned in the Bible - these are the Spiritual Gifts or Service Gifts of the Holy Spirit, as shown below:

What if I am hurting and feeling unworthy to approach the Lord due to my sins and failures? Can I still receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit?

In His great gaze of mercy, God looks upon us and holds out a hand of forgiveness and healing to those who are farthest from Him and seeks to draw us to His heart.

St Faustina wrote: "The greater the sinner, the greater the right to God's mercy."

There are 5 Life in the Spirit Seminar talks at the Tent Revival:

- God's Love

- Salvation

- New Life

- Receiving God's Gift

- & Preparing for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Each talk builds up to a deeper relationship wiht Jesus d and prepares us for the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

We will have a Penance Service on Saturday night with sacramental confessions, culminating with prayers for the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

All this is focused on helping us to have a life changing experience of the love, mercy and renewed hope in Jesus Christ- no matter our life circumstances.

The Charismatic Roots of St Antoninus Church (And why Jesus is the Hope for our Church and Newark)

Since 1975, when St. Antoninus was “born again” as a Catholic Charismatic parish, our parish has been a major center of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. At that time until about 12 years ago, most of our parishioners came from outside Newark, some traveling from distances of an hour or more, to attend our Sunday Masses. Little by little, the parish is now becoming more rooted in our immediate neighborhood, serving in a special way the newest group of Catholic immigrants.

Now, 70% or more of our parishioners come from Newark or the immediate surrounding towns. This has brought us to a closer understanding of the needs of the neighborhood we serve and the realization that the life of our church depends on the life of neighborhood. For this reason we are committed all the more to proclaiming that Jesus is the only hope for this city and every city, the only hope for our families and every family, the only hope for all of our lives.

It is our prayer that the Tent Revival (Life in the Spirit Seminar ) will be an opportunity to allow the Holy Spirit to fill our whole life and change us, that we begin to know in a new way the amazing love God has for us and the abundant life into which Jesus has called us in the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we experience the renewing power of the Holy Spirit, we allow Him to light a fire in us to share this treasure with those around us, as we hear the parting words of Our Lord Jesus Christ “Go and make disciples of all nations…”

We pray this in a special way at this time of our 150th Jubilee of our founding as a church (1875) and 50th Anniversary in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (1975). Amen!
