Project Highlight: VELCO
[ Views from the VELCO lines]
We are in our fifth year of doing work for the Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO). Currently, we are supporting their Transmission Line Refurbishment (TLR) projects. This work includes construction of access roads, installation and removal of timber mats, construction of structure pads, installation of culverts, installation and maintenance of reinforced silt fence and straw waddle, removal of wood structures, staging of new utility poles and arms, and restoration of the entire right-of-way at the completion of each project.
Over the last year, we have been building roads in places VELCO has avoided in the past because of their difficult terrain.

In 2019, we:
  • Completed 7.5 miles of access road
  • Worked on 10 different VELCO lines
  • Restored 115 structures
  • Had over 150 equipment moves to and from these projects
  • Worked as far south as Stamford, VT and as far north as Lyndonville, VT, as well as many towns in between

So far in 2020 we have:
  • Completed over a mile of access road
  • Worked on 3 different VELCO lines

In June we will be:
  • Hauling 4,376 timber mats for VELCO
  • Starting work on two lines: Derby and Newport

We’d like to send a big shout-out to everyone who makes this work both possible and seamless, from office to field! Without everyone putting in their best efforts, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Thank you!

Industry-Leading Response
Sharing COVID-19 Response Practices with VELCO
Last week we shared some of our COVID-19 lessons-learned on VELCO’s all-company call. John Casella II represented the team, with backing from Joe Casella, Kyle Cornell, Brad Matteson, and many others.

VELCO is among our most safety-oriented customers, and we were honored to be invited to talk through how we have managed to keep each other safe, stay united as a team, and continue high-quality work throughout the last two months - especially at a time when many other construction companies were forced to stop operating.

Here are a couple highlights from our presentation on what has worked for us so far:
  • Strong safety culture: Everyone on our team has leaned into all our new SOPs and PPE – we could not work without the daily commitment of everyone on the team.

  • Staying out front: We kept informed of changing conditions and responded quickly at all levels of the company.

  • Going remote: All the hard work of the last two years to get B2W up and running and adapt to 21st century technology paid off. We were able to fully comply with Stay Home, Stay Safe while still operating the essential administration of the company. Field and office remained connected throughout.

  • Staying above the line: We are incredibly proud of the quick, practical actions that everyone has taken to get their work done and support each other despite constant change and uncertainty.

We are humbled by the grit and determination of our team, and grateful that, thanks to all of you, we have continued to operate. However, we don’t have all the answers, and we need to stay committed to learning from our mistakes, constantly improving, staying above the line, and remaining Leaders in Safety.

Do you have ideas about how we can continue to improve our response? We want to hear from you! Email Safety Joe

Does your mask fit properly?
Here's a way to make it more comfortable
Thank you all for being diligent about wearing your masks during the appropriate times. We all understand why we need to use face coverings, but it is also important that they fit well. We're hearing from some that their masks can be too loose, too tight, or they keep falling down.

Check out the quick video below for a helpful tip from Melissa Coltey on how to make adjustments to your mask that will give you a more comfortable fit.
