If my previous articles haven’t already said it, I LOVE that Allisonville Christian Church (ACC) has so many multi-generational families among its membership. Sarah Reed is a third-generation ACC member. Her grandparents, Bob and Sue Bates and Vernon and Elaine Scott, and her parents, Dan Scott and Kristen Bates-Scott, along with her brothers, Elijah and Noah, are beloved ACC folks.
Sarah was born in Tucson, Arizona. She lived there until she was 11 when her family relocated to Ohio so that her dad could attend school. After that, the family moved to Indianapolis to be closer to Sarah’s maternal grandparents. The Bates-Scott family was drawn to ACC because of our strong youth programming. Sarah graduated from North Central High School in 2011, participating in show choir, Spanish Honor Society, and recreational soccer. She attended Hanover College, studying elementary education, with a minor in psychology. Sarah was also very active in our youth group, attending church camp at Camp Barbee and participating in several Arts at Allisonville shows—Godspell, Music Man, and Daughters of Z. She also was the stage manager for Wizard of Oz.
Next up for Sarah was a year with “Xplor”, an initiative sponsored by the National Benevolent Association (NBA). She was so happy to return to her beloved Arizona for her Xplor year, working in Tucson and living in her old church, First Christian Church of Tucson. Sarah said that Xplor felt a lot like church camp. She was fortunate to work with many bright lights, including Shonda Jha, Ben Boren, and Rizola Lau. In a nice dovetail to her college studies, Sarah became the Director of an After School program for un-homed children. This truly ignited Sarah’s love for education, teaching, and learning.
Sarah always felt she might enter missionary work, following in the footsteps of her grandparents, but Indiana was calling. She missed her family, and she was on fire to teach. Her student teaching year was rough, and her passions focused at this point on our earliest learners. Sarah is a firm believer in Universal Pre-K, and the Indianapolis Public School System (IPS) was beginning to offer this program. Sarah turned her sights on following instead in her mom’s footsteps in Early Childhood Education. But…Sarah’s degree was in Elementary Education—and so she had to work as a teaching assistant while she decided about getting her Early Childhood endorsement and license. She worked with some amazing teachers—her colleagues Qiana and Lily were instrumental in Sarah’s career development. Sarah ultimately received this endorsement and has been a Lead Teacher for three years. Additionally, she is pursuing her Montessori Certificate.
Sarah has been married for 2½ years to her wife Marie. They met through Sarah’s colleague Qiana. They met in 2018 and their first date was a movie. For Sarah, it was pretty much love at first sight! They were engaged in May of 2019 and planned to marry on March 21, 2020. We know what happened to that date! Sarah and Marie eventually were married in Sarah’s parents’ backyard on July 5, 2020—masks on, six feet apart, and “sweltering”. Sarah and Marie share a love of teaching (Marie is a teaching assistant), reading (they have over 700 books between them!), book buying, painting/crafting, singing, and being Aunties to Baby Kevin, Marie’s brother’s little one. They are currently living with Sarah’s parents to save money to buy their first home. Sarah Reed is a beloved member of our church family—get to know her!
