After an intense three week stretch including the Stanford Invitational and the Harvard National Speech and Debate Tournament, HP Debate ended its regular season yesterday by competing in the 2025 ICDA State Tournament at Harper College.

Fielding strong squads in both the invitational and the state championship tournaments, the Giants achieved their best results of the year. Highland Park finished in 3rd place on the invitational side, a mere two points behind the 1st place team, Adlai Stevenson High School!  This outstanding group effort included award-winning individual performances by Liam Rosemeyer (1st in Chamber and 3rd place overall), Siena Logan (1st in Chamber and Best Presiding Officer), Lily Benensohn (2nd in Chamber and Best Presiding Officer), Kobi Silver (2nd in Chamber), Megan Kim (2nd in Chamber), Sophia Elkin (Best Presiding Officer), and Isabelle Novoseletsky (Best Presiding Officer).

In the state championship tournament, seniors Nathan Sukenik and Jim Shivak and juniors Rennie Smoler and Eli Levin etched their names into Illinois Congressional Debate Association history. Facing off against the strongest debaters in the state, these four Giants overcame the competition to win the 2025 ICDA State Championship!!! On top of bringing home the championship trophy for the second time in only three years, Rennie was awarded 2nd in Chamber and Best Presiding Officer, and Nathan was honored with 1st in Chamber and 2nd place overall!

In addition to the many individual and team awards earned yesterday, two Giants were called up to the stage to receive a very special honor. Senior Nathan Sukenik and sophomore Callie Wu were both named to the ICDA All-State Team, an honor reserved for the top ten debaters in the state based on their accomplishments over the course of the season!

Yesterday's tournament marks the end of another memorable season of ICDA debate. Thank you to the many competitors whose hard work made it all possible, AND CONGRATULATIONS TO HIGHLAND PARK HIGH SCHOOL, THE NEW ICDA STATE CHAMPIONS!!!

5 Things You Should Know This Week:

  1. HPHS is hosting the IHSA Boys Basketball Regional. The semifinal games are Wednesday, February 24. Our Giants take on OPRF at 7:30pm. The Regional Final is scheduled for Friday, February 28 at 7:00pm. Because this is an IHSA contest all spectators, including staff members, must purchase a ticket. We hope you will come out to support our Boys Basketball Program.
  2. Good luck to Dana Holt who will be competing at the IHSA Girls Wrestling State Finals this week in Bloomington.
  3. Congratulations to Sophomore swimmer Andrew Blauer who qualified for the IHSA State Finals in both the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Breaststroke. Andrew was the Sectional Champion in the 100 Fly and set a school record in the 100 Breaststroke at Saturday’s Libertyville Sectional.
  4. Our Boys and Girls Track and Field Programs got their seasons started and based on their early season performances, it could be a special year for both programs. Boys Gymnastics also got their season started. There is room for more student-athletes so if you know of someone who is interested, please reach out to Coach Bekkedal.
  5. The Girls Basketball season came to end for our Giants on Friday when the team was defeated by Maine South in the Regional Final. It was a tremendous season for the program as our Varsity team won 20 games, won the Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament, finished 2nd at the Round Lake MLK Tournament, and won the CSL North title for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to everyone involved with the Girls Basketball Program.

Community Opportunities

Senior Captain Dylan Lansky scores 2 goals in 30 seconds, including the game-winner as the Highland Park Varsity Hockey Team pulls the GIANT upset in the State Playoffs and beats #14 Brother Rice 3-2 in Oak Lawn on Sunday. The Seniors carried the way and punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 4 years. Goalie JC Aguilar was sensational in net stopping 30+ saves, while Ben Lichtenfeld scored the game’s first goal and Charlie Cohen added 2 assists to net the Giants improbable win. Up next is #2 ranked Loyola Academy Saturday at Heartland Arena in Lincolnwood at 2:40pm. These Giants are not done yet!

Meanwhile, the JV Hockey Team also finished the year strong with 3 straight playoff wins! The Junior Giants beat top seeded BGHW 3-2 on Wednesday night (Freshman Tyler Lansky with the game-winning goal), topped New Trier 2-1 on Sunday (Sophomore Riley Hamilton with the GWG) and held on against D155 Monday night to secure a 2-1 win (Freshman Luke Pieti with the GWG). Sophomore Goalie Will Romo was absolutely lights-out all season long playing in virtually every game! HP JV played their best hockey at the right time! Tremendous growth and effort to cap off a successful season for the boys!
