Athletics

The Athletic Department was hard at work over the Thanksgiving Holiday. All of our winter sports programs were practicing and Boys Wrestling, Girls Wrestling, and Boys Basketball competed over the holiday weekend. Congratulations to the Boys Basketball Team on their 2nd place finish at the Ridgewood Thanksgiving Tournament. The team went 3-1 in the tournament and Simon Moschin and Matthew Simon were named to the All-Tournament Team. Girls Wrestling competed at New Trier on Tuesday and in the Niles West Invitational on Saturday and many of our girls experienced success. It has been great to see the continued growth of this program. Our Boys Wrestling Program was all over the Chicagoland area on Saturday. The Freshmen and JV squads traveled to Libertyville and the Varsity group participated in the Naperville North Invitational. Some exciting things are happening with our wrestling programs in the IM Gym. Girls Gymnastics opens their season this week versus New Trier at Deerfield High School. Best of luck Giants!

Community Opportunities

The Highland Park Varsity Giants Ice Hockey Team beat Deerfield 4-3 Wednesday night in an epic OT shootout thriller to win THE Rivalry Game and secure the District 113 Cup for the 3rd time in 4 years!

The Seniors carried the way in this instant classic over their fiercest rival in a game for the ages. In front of a packed house reaching capacity at Glacier Ice Arena, the Giants got goals from Charlie Cohen in the 1st and Owen Silverman in the 2nd before Dylan Lansky broke a 2-2 tie midway through the 3rd to go up 3-2. Deerfield then struck back with less than 5 minutes remaining to tie it at 3 at the end of regulation. A 3 x 3 ten (10) minute sudden-death overtime ensued as both squads pushed it to the limit with one scoring chance after the next. The back-and-forth action was relentless, and the energy was palpable. AJ Caplan was sensational in net stopping multiple point-blank opportunities from the Warriors. All the skaters played their hearts out and stretched the boundaries of sheer exhaustion. Ultimately the 10-minute OT ended scoreless forcing a sudden death shootout. After Deerfield tallied first, Dylan Lansky matched and scored on a beautiful move to tie the shootout at 1-1. Teams traded chances back and forth (but to no avail) until the 5th round. That’s when Owen Silverman skated to center ice to take his turn at shootout glory. A few strides in and a sneaky quick move around the DF goalie, Silverman backhanded the puck into the back of the net, and pandemonium erupted. The Giants had done it in euphoric fashion to beat Deerfield 2-1 in the shootout. The student spirit and support played a huge role in rallying the Giants to Victory and returning the Cup home! Thank you for showing out in BLUE!

The JV Hockey Team is also playing great hockey and has found a wonderful mid-season stride. Going for their second consecutive tournament win, the JV Giants beat Chicago North, D211, Libertyville, and the Ice Cats to go 4-0 in Group Play in this weekend’s Thanksgiving Tournament in Buffalo Grove. They then skated tough against top-ranked Stevenson for 3 periods before falling 2-1 in the 3rd period of the Championship Game. An overall great effort for these young Giants as they take a commendable 2nd place/runner-up trophy back to Highland Park.

The proceeds from the raffle will go to Bandstand with the hopes of going towards the expenses for our upcoming tour of Austria so we would appreciate help from our community by participating in this raffle.

We are raffling 2 tickets to one of the following shows:

MORAINE TOWNSHIP HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE 2024

Moraine Township is pleased to once again partner with Highland Park / Highwood school and the community to provide gifts to local children through our annual Holiday Gift Drive. We are offering the program to all of our income-qualified clients, including children and their families, seniors, and single adults using Township services.

Sponsoring Children

We will once again be offering a “hybrid” approach to sponsors for our Township children this season: sponsors can choose to shop for gifts based on a child’s wish list and clothing size for Pre-K to 5th grade, or purchase a Target gift card for children 6 to 12th grade.

Note: we are asking sponsors to spend $75 for the gift, or $75 for a Target gift card per child.

  • PreK to Grade 5: GIFTS PURCHASED FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN SHOULD BE UNWRAPPED and delivered in a festive gift bag with loose tissue paper.
  • Students Grade 6-12: the local Target store is the most convenient for our residents, and unlike Amazon gift certificates, does not require internet access. We are asking that gift cards be delivered in a festive gift bag with holiday candy.

As an alternative, sponsors of older children can make a monetary contribution to Moraine Township with a personal check or credit card donation on our website, and we will purchase the gift card on your behalf. Use the drop-down menu to select “holiday gift drive”.

Families and Seniors

We will be providing gifts to families, single adults, and seniors, including snacks and games. If you want to spend a different amount, or order directly from Amazon, this opportunity may interest you. When we send sponsorship assignments, we will include a link to our Amazon Wish List. You do not need to commit to the amount you want to spend, just indicate your interest.

Use this QR Code to sponsor one or more children, or a single adult(s) or senior(s), and select “holiday gift drive” from the drop-down menu.

In addition to your gift, the Township will also provide families with grocery gift cards to shop for their family’s special holiday food.
