"My daily practice uses active imagination in conversation with the materiality of clay. I would like my work to offer a sense of being buoyed by love, hope, curiosity, and the imagination."

January 27th, 10:30 am

Dear Friends of the gallery,

Our 2021 State of the Art: Ceramics Biennial exhibition, "The Living World in Clay," ends Saturday, February 5. Thursday, January 27 at 10:30 am, exhibiting artist Jenny Mendes will speak about her art and inspirations. Her colorful ceramic plates in the show feature hybrid human-animal figures amid tranquil nature-inspired motifs.

My Ceramic work has always had a life of its own, separate from my desire to control it. If I look back at my ceramics over time, a continuous thread runs through my work, a signature stylistic message from my unconscious to conscious self. Always learning and relearning how to decipher and translate the special union I experience with this material, I find inspiration from a deep connection to self and friends, from my relationships with nature, humans, and animals, and from working with energy, both tangible and intangible.

Mendes received a BA in Ceramics from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, in 1982 and continued her education at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, returning after that as resident artist and instructor.

The lecture is Free and open to the public via Zoom for the community.

Stay warm,

Lisa Costello
